  • Anyone know how to improove the DAB sound? My freeview was a nightmare til i bought the correct aerial (wideband), is it possible to connect my DAB to my outdoor aerial or am i talking rubbish?

Reception problems aside the quality is down to broadcasts using MP2 @ low bitrates, but like koru above FM is hopeless in my region for the vast majority of equipment available and particularly so in car even with boosters.

I am shocked that MSE is stating that DAB radios provide "better sound". Advertisers have had their knuckles rapped by the ASA for making such untrue claims in the past.

DAB sound quality is noticeably inferior to FM.

Why is everyone getting on their high horse about this? I love my cheap DAB radio, LBC, talk sport, BBC 5 live clear with no hiss and the fantastic travel channel which is a godsend for the motorist!!

Its a £20-£40 radio! its not meant to last until 2020, who cares if its worse than FM. Most people have an FM radio so if Radio 3 is not as good on DAB then use FM, its simple!

Stop moaning and trying to do DAB down, it happens everytime there is a feature on a cheap DAB radio!

If you havent got one and want a better choice of channel and its not convenient to have the radio through your tv or buy speakers to attach to your freeview box then get one and dont listen to all these moaners!!!
  • BOYBECK, or anyone who knows:

does the internet radio use your home broadband allowance? So, for example, if my monthly broadband fee includes 2GB of download, would the internet radio eat into that? I only ask because once when I listened to a station on my computer for about 10 hours during one week, this ate a good chunk of my allowance and I couldn't listen regularly or I would end up overpaying. Thanks for any advice, Tom

Yes it will use your broadband allowance. The amount used depends on the actual quality of the internet station being listened to. Figures I read suggested it can be between 30-130Mb an hour depending on the station.

Care is required with DAB. I live in Redditch in Worcestershire and the signal is very poor. Also, I don't like the fact you have to use the aerial. Which usually ends up pointing in an inconvenient direction!

Many people don't realise a large number of digital stations are available through their cable network (channels in the 900s). If this is fed through a stereo you don't even need to have the TV on at all and the sound is much better than portable.

    Hope that helps someone!

A couple of things. I also live in Redditch and the signal has improved, since I first got it, to the extent that I can get DAB anywhere in the house with the aerial still folded on top of my Pure One.
Don't forget Freeview. The quality of the stations that are in Freeview is as good as or better (http://www.digitalradiotech.co.uk/) than cable. This
If you are worried about DAB+ then there are radios out there that will be software upgradable to DAB+. Check http://www.digitalradiotech.co.uk/ to find them.
