  • I reserved a Sony at Argos last night at £24.99. When I went to collect it this morning the price came up at £39.99. I queried it with the SA who checked and said the price had been put back up last night, so I didn't bother. Hope they get left with a load of stock.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.

  • The Gadget show did a DAB comparison test recently. On Batteries the Bush Retro style and the Pure lasted 35-40 hours. The Roberts one they tested lasted for 85 hours. Also when it comes to sound quality, it very much depends on the Radio you choose. Most newer ones have far superior electronics in them and if that is coupled with a good speaker the quality will be equivalent to FM on stations with a high bitrate broadcast. I can only assume your experience of DAB was from the early days.

If you are in a good reception area for FM, perhaps DAB is inferior sound. Where I live, FM is very poor and gets distorted. DAB has proven to be crystal clear, so is infinitely better, without any need for an aerial, other than the thin wire one that comes with the radio. We largely only listen to BBC 4 and 2, but I still love DAB.

If you are the kind of person who can tell the difference between an mp3 file downloaded at different bit rates then you may not like DAB, but otherwise I suggest you will love it.

Edit: Our DAB radio is a very cheap (£40) Goodmans mini-system, so the acceptable sound quality is not a result of using expensive gear

    Can I make a suggestion.

Forget DAB radio, go for Internet radio.

I have just bought one of these:

I have more than 8,700 radio stations at my finger tips from all your local ones to stations around the world. You can just about get all the stations that are on DAB too.

Admittedly the sound quality isn't great on some of the channels, but I love it. There are also streaming 80s channels on the net which I love. No DJs, no adverts just continuous music. Internet radio uses the wireless siganal around your house.

You can get all the BBC stations and can even listen to the on demand stuff through it by going through a series of menus.

You can use a web page called https://www.reciva.com to set all your favourite stations on the radio itself and search for new ones.

I work in radio and I'm impressed with IR. I have seen one box as cheap as £50 in Aldi. I bought the one above because it's rechargeable so I can move it around the house.

I am shocked that MSE is stating that DAB radios provide "better sound". Advertisers have had their knuckles rapped by the ASA for making such untrue claims in the past.

DAB sound quality is noticeably inferior to FM.
  • Ordered the one from Amazon last night, everything seems okay so far.
