what exactly did / did not happen? Have they blocked the payment? I had terrible trouble with my first deposit into CHIP from Santander because they considered it a fraudulent transaction but after a looooong discuss with them, all my deposits since have gone through without a hitch. I can easily imagine that HSBC have an even more dinosaurish view of Open Banking payments than Santander have/had.

May be get in touch with CHIP (as suggested in the link above) and explain your issue to them.

It seems to go ok on the HSBC side, then when I get bounced back to Chip it apologises and says that the payment can't be completed (nothing is actually debited). It then shows as cancelled in my transaction history at Chip. A £1 test transfer worked, but anything larger seems to fail. I've used Open Banking transfers before without issue.
I'll contact them tomorrow, but there is only so much hassle I'll put up with before bailing.
That sounds exactly like the problems I had with Barclays - all seemed to go ok from Barclays to (truelayer/tink?) confirmation web page then when landing back to Chip it seemingly went wrong at their end. Turns out Barclays fraud team had flagged the payments and stopped them.

Yes, could be the same in my case as I've been able to make a larger payment this morning. I've probably 'trained' the fraud detection algorithm that this pattern of transactions is normal for my account when sending FP, but it's probably getting flagged due to me using OB for this account.
At least they didn't block my online banking!
  • I was never able to pull in more than £2k a day with Barclays so I switched linked account to Santander (convenient for me as already have accounts with Santander). I pulled in 2 x £25k in one day.

Thought Chip itself had an upper limit of £15k per transaction?

Maybe it did in the past but it certainly didn't for me yesterday. I paid £30k in one go and £50k back in two transactions (as I know Santander has £25k limit per transaction).

I’ve just opened a savings account and the initial deposit seemed to transfer in from my Santander account without too much issue. The whole app though does seem to be a bit ‘cumbersome’. Logging in seems to entail inputting my mobile number, which is supposedly my unique login, then awaiting an authorisation code. This doesn’t appear, so I request another; again nothing. On the third attempt a code arrives which I input only to find it’s invalid as it related to my first request. Then two further codes appear. Lesson learnt, don’t expect the code to arrive instantaneously.
Tried making second deposit, but into the prize account, that was denied; possibly the savings account has to be open a certain time before I can set up the prize account?
Will see how it pans out before I decide on whether to make further deposits

Update - have since made a successful small deposit into the prize account by way of bank transfer, rather than by card. Not sure if that’s why it went through or if it’s because the savings account has now been opened long enough.

I have held a CHIP account for several months. Can't remember the initial sign-up steps but I never had any login issues since - and I do log in quite a lot.

Can't comment on the Prize account as it doesn't appeal to me. It might have been your bank blocking a deposit?

It's just a run-of-the-mill mobile phone number confirmation by SMS. Presumably this will be done each time the app is installed on a new device or reinstalled.
It's worth mentioning that if you want any kind of login protection, you do need to configure a PIN (and biometrics). It doesn't seem like any authentication is required by default.
