"They messed with Yorkshire"
.
Excellent.
Just to clarify, as a resident of the county town of North Yorkshire, I'm forty or so minutes from my son in the county town of Yorkshire which, for administrative purposes, is 'the hole in the doughnut' and runs on its own without much input from the other Yorkshires. There is no South Riding. Never has been - and no North, East, or West Ridings now (sadly), despite what it says on the Magistrates' Court. I hope that clears things up.
Back on topic: it's a gorgeous day here but for those wanting their chazza fix, remember charities have their online shops and there are always interesting things there. Here, for example, is Oxfam's, where I love to hunt through the books as they have a lot of older and rarer ones.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
The sun's been out and I think I’m solar powered (Onebrokelady)

West Riding still exists in my head, as that's where I lived for 9 happy years of my childhood before someone messed with the county borders & my village became part of Greater Manchester. 'South Riding' is a fiction book by Winifred Holtby.

wondercollie said:Sorry that made me smile. Yorkshire - large? I'm Canadian and it's a 14 hour drive to my Mum's house.
Apologies for derailing.
And now it's also bizarre to think that if both my BC brother and UK me are going to meet up at my mom's place our flights take almost the same amount of time - about 7 hours.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. Just to point out- but you probably knew already that Yorkshire was originally divided into 'ridings'- derived from 'trithings' or tripartitions- so there were only 3.
Also to point out that the second largest county is Lincolnshire- now that Humberside has gone! It is as far from the Humber to the southern boundary as it is from that boundary to London! Many miles! (Humberside in now N & NE Lincolnshire)
To get back on subject:
cheapie Charity shop in Mablethorpe- books 3 for £1. All money to MacMillan (but not their shop)
9 shops in Louth -Sue Ryder- most garments £1
S.Norfolk- some good ones in Attleborough, a few in Diss
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Thanks for that link @Cherryfudge. I had a potter round the kitchen section and came across this set which made me smile Mid Century Modern Silver Plated Tea Set | Oxfam Shop
I think our local charity emporia will be open tomorrow so I'm planning to take along a bag of bits and bobs to drop off as an excuse for a look around.5 -
A quick gallop around Ripon today cos only 3 of the usual chazza shops were open. Nothing of interest or use to be found tho. (Did get loads of reduced foodie bargains in Booth's tho
) Frustratingly, the Samaritan's chazza was closed but you could see loads of sale rails all set up
A few days ago, (no idea which as all the days are scrambled in my brain at the mo!), I called into the St Michaels House & Home chazza just outside Harrogate looking for a small, cheap and cheerful TV for my friend's conservatory over Christmas. Two looked suitable, a Sony and a JVC priced at £30 and £35 respectively. I had decided on the Sony but the very helpful assistant kept pointing out that the JVC was a much newer model so I ended up buying that one. Much to my surprise it turned out to be a smart TV and just the job! And...and...er um, the previous owner hasn't removed their subscriptions to various streaming services. It would be very, very wrong to, *cough*, accidentally....ya know......... wouldn't it?6 -
Oh Miro! Even when you don't get charity shop finds, you successfully plunder Booths... (Turns a delicate shade of green with envy but then getting to a "Waitrose of the North" is a bit of a trek even in Lancashire.).
Then a smart TV which hasn't been fully unsubscribed - ooh, the temptations! Go on, one Really Obvious childrens TV show? Or something to remind them to change their passwords?4 -

I've not been chazzer-ing yet this year, but plan a jaunt out tomorrow in search of cheap coloured glass (my Christmas present from Mister CJ was a glass fusing kiln, it's proving an addictive hobby!). I haven't made very much with it yet but I am learning all sorts of new words (frits! stringer! dichro!) and getting to grips with something called the Coefficient of Expansion. Marvellous.
Younger daughter phoned her older sister on New Year's Eve with the command to "get down to the Oxfam Superstore immediately!". Turns out they had a whole stack of brand-new-with-tags Zara clothing at excellent prices. Older daughter treated herself to a lovely brand new coat for £20, which retails at £149 in the Zara online sale so she's happy.9 -
