Last year:DigForVictory said:Verily I say Gosh what a shop! Far bigger than it looks, wonderful staff & yes, a box given over exclusively to Pyrex so there are some lovely little lidded dishes (“never been used!” as the assistant happily cheered me on) in mum’s dishwasher, & there are a few books (‘the miniaturist’ jumped into my hands!) and even a little pot of Bourne - small beautiful & even the Acquiz committee would nod, (as I left the jug with the formidable chip in the spout and the other dozen-plus little lidded pots for other Denbyholics). Even change from a tenner, which I am stunned by, happily.
This weekend? Most of those pieces In Use! Youngest (deserving of a medal the size of a dustbin lid) not only made two substantial Cottage pies, but also a cauldron of stew, the leftovers of which I diligently portioned & labelled in the smaller dishes (& then into the freezer) for her to remember us fondly by.
I really must try harder to finish the Miniaturist!7 -
Miró said:Had a read of the notices this afty, no mention of relocating locally ☹️. Have you been to the new big YMCA shop in Ripon, near Booths?
Ripon is outside my stamping ground, sadly (but if and when I happen to be over there, you can be sure I will have an eye open for charity shops).DigForVictory said:Last year:DigForVictory said:Verily I say Gosh what a shop! @DigForVictory I was back in that same shop yesterday, looking for round Pyrex dishes large enough and deep enough for a portion-for-two yet small enough to fit in my recently-acquired Ninja. I was not disappointed, that crate of Pyrex was full and I chose a couple of pieces which are the perfect size for £1 each.
I also bought a couple of National Trust logo folding chairs for £3 each, and lovely purple Rab padded jacket for me for just £4.7 -
@DigForVictory I spied some vintage Denby on Saturday in CR whilst en route to the cinema. It wasn't a pattern I'd seen before. There were dinner plates, a lidded oblong dish and another unlidded dish with a sort of spray/harvest type design. Had I been on my way home I might have been tempted as the lidded dish was only £6. Please tell me I haven't missed a load of treasure to resell for my charity fundraising?!Cross-stitch WIP: Haberdashery Shop Fiver Friday challenge 2025 founding member 😊 Read 25 books in 2025 17/25 Currently reading The Ghost Fields by Elly Griffiths4

It's taken me long while but as promised, here's my book report. The Fact Of A Body by Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich.A lawyer, who is absolutely against the death penalty, is shown the video confession of a man (Ricky Langley) who's been sentenced to death. In order to understand him and the why of it, she starts looking into his case. This book is her story plus his, constructed from court documents and transcripts, clinic records, newspaper reports, eye witness testimonies, tv coverage etc.You know how they say everyone has a book in them? Well this is hers. Her story/her past is recounted in unflinching detail and parts of it are quite hard to read actually. There is criminality in her family that she needs to understand, and that's the hook. In trying to understand why Ricky Langley did what he did she hopes it might help her understand what happened in her family. It's a true story - she calls it "A murder and a memoir" which is exactly what it is. It's beautifully written, her writing style reminded me of James Lee Burke - it has a similar poeticism. So I'd say it's a good book and a good read, but not a very good book. I'll not look for anything else she might have written because I think she'll have depleted herself writing this one.
Edit - my offer stands to send it to anyone who wants to read it nextI'm unsure about my spine, I think it's holding me back.6 -
Lovely wander around the shops in Christchurch. There are a lot!!! I suspect about a dozen on or behind the high street and then a few more if you head north towards the train station.
Anyways OH spotted some lovely Apilco 6 coffee cups plus pot in the window of one for £15. White with blue which I've never seen before. So we went in where we discovered the more traditional green with gold set with 6 coffee cups with saucers, 4 espresso with saucers plus pot, jug and sugar bowl. £40 but looked brand new so he had to have them.
