Oh gawd don’t be telling me that @kiss_me_now9, I’m very low church when it comes to books. I’ll have to actually be careful with this one, just in case!
Edit - I came on to say I’ve started reading it, and it seems rather good so far 😃I'm unsure about my spine, I think it's holding me back.7 -
Well I never knew that about the knives and scissors under the counters. They do usually have a measuring tape if I want to check the diameter of a pyrex or a cake tin but it has never heretofore occurred to me to enquire for sharp blades.
Ha! Shall sally forth tomorrow armed with inside information and let you know the outcome.
Thankyou to all for the tips.5 -
Sadly, charity shops have had to become careful as youngsters are reported as sourcing pointy metal from charity shops. For the asking, there are All Sorts of Fun by way of scissors & knitting needles. (Himself used to round up singleton needles for any project that needed a suitable length of metal, and bundles would be set aside for him!)6

Other things I've heard of being kept behind the counter, hammers, screwdrivers, all sharp pointy DIY tools, can openers (the old fashioned ones with a pointy bit), steel knitting needles and crochet hooks.
What a world we live in now!7 -
Floss said:While I remember, I'm planning a weekend in Newcastle with my gentlemen caller soon - can anyone direct me to the best chazzers to drag him into? For info, we're already going to Tynemouth on the Saturday.
Gosforth High St has some good ones with a Mind round the corner on Salters Road.
Jesmond has a posh but spenny boutique type one (St Oswalds Hospice) and an Oxfam book and record shop. There is also a big Mind due to open soon but not sure when.
Lots in Whitley Bay just along the coast from Tynemouth.7 -
DigForVictory said:Did you know Burleigh are owned buy the same folk who own Denby? That the underglaze tissue print is a 200+ year skill & each piece starts as plain china then the tissue is smoothed on (hence the fleet of seconds where the skill is not quite sufficient). That they're still in Stoke on Trent (unlike other major pottery brands that have slipped off to lower cost locations ahem Wedgewood & Doulton are largely made in Indonesia - but send UK craftsfolk out to maintain standards...)
But you're Potternerd, of course you do.

Nice find today in the Cancer Research shop in Northallerton……a burgundy backpack from John Lewis in a lovely thick but supple grained leather for £8.45. Found It online but no longer stocked so can’t check the original price but similar ones are around £100. This is it……Soz the pic is sooooo big 🤭12

Ooh lovely backpack @Miró
I saw a lovely china plate today in BHF. It was oblong but a bit wider than the usual sandwich tray size, white with a blue striped pattern and made by the Little Venice Cake Company. It was £3.99. Really really wanted it for myself, but resisted as already have plenty like it. I didn't have my phone with me so couldn't google the company, but seems they are based in St James, London and are quite exclusive as you have to 'register interest' for their products.
I also saw a lovely grey and navy fairisle style jumper in Oxfam. Was a brand I'd never heard of, 75% wool but on closer inspection was very bobbly on the front and had a delightful crumb of biscuit/cake stuck to it. For £5.50 I left it.

Very nice @Miró, beautifully simple and a useful size. I really like thatI'm unsure about my spine, I think it's holding me back.3

A good 5 mins swoop into a chaz yesterday afternoon yielded an Oasis blouse, and Honor Millburn top (on Googling Edinburgh Woollen Mill has similar for £30), a fully lined silk scarf and a boxed A E Williams pewter bookmark - which is going for £10.95 on fleabay. Not a bad haul for a total of £4:
ETA: its just cost me a lot more than £4, I have just gone and spent a load on the Edinburgh Woollen Mill site.
No man is worth crawling on this earth.
So much to read, so little time.11
