Subject to the sanity test and a failed element, there's not a lot to go wrong in an old-school NSH. The bricks don't really degrade, they just sit there and absorb and then radiate the heat.
I suspect that they are simply undersized for the size of the room, and/or the property is poorly insulated.

Something like this will probably not need planning as no external system.

    https://www.aircondirect.co.uk/p/1681860/electriq-12000-btu-wall-mounted-heat-pump-air-conditioner-with-smart-app

Input approx 800w and output nearly 3kw for heat. Other benefits it's a dehumidifier and air con for what is supposed to be an even hotter year next year.

We are installing the smaller 10000 unit in our converted seperate garage over Christmas.

@Mstty that's a neat unit but a bit of bummer with that sound level.  Why did you not go with Splits?
@MARKMAKAVELI hopefully the housing association will not create hurdles.  These are not perfect solutions but work really well.

It's really a test of that kind of unit. We are installing it in our stand alone garage that has been converted into a gym (so cheap heating and aircon for winter and summer) and added benefit dehumidifier.

Mrs mstty cannot wait so it is being installed tomorrow and from the quick fire up test all the noise is produced from the two fans at the back which will sit snuggly over the ducts outside. I don't think it's going to be too noisy once installed but will report back on that.

A quick check with the local council planning department last month with this unit, as there is nothing outside just air vents they have said no planning required.

For the house we are eyeing up a Mitsubishi split system for the lounge and main bedroom now that every year appears to be getting warmer and warmer. The theory here is we can leave the whole house ASHP off for longer deep into winter (e.g. until this December 10 day cold spell hit) and use those two units for individual room heating and dehumidification. Summer we will have a lovely cool lounge and main bedroom.
  • Ispookie How much is the air to air heat pump cost to install and roughly how much cheaper to run?

Same questions for your heat pump mstty?

For the stand alone all internal unit in the garage £75 installation as it comes with a 3 pin plug so no extra electrics required just the cost of someone to drill the two big 180mm holes, the 25mm drain pipe and fixings to hand it on the wall. (I was going to do it myself but at that price and this close to christmas...no brainer)

The Mitsubishi split system first quote came in at £2400 installed in both rooms and all electrics (going to get a few more quotes)

For the whole house ASHP I don't have the cost as we moved in when the house was 6 years old and it was installed in the build. Others on here have had retro for heat pump systems ranging from £12,000-£25,000 if memory serves me right.
  • Mstty am I understanding this correctly?

For my living room I need about 12000 BTU so something like this https://www.orionairsales.co.uk/mitsubishi-electric-air-conditioning-msz-hr35vf-classic-wall-mounted-35kw12000btu-r32-a-240v50hz-10699-p.asp or the one you listed would work for me?

It's about £1k, can install myself or even pay someone....so what's the difference between this and a heat pump or do I need a heat pump to run this? I dunno where the thousands of pounds costs are coming from?

    Thanks

Mark, have you checked with the managing agents of the block if you are allowed to mount anything external on the building? At my flat there were specific clauses in the lease that prevented any changes to the external appearance of the building, so no one was permitted to install anything like satellites or air con units etc, and I think this is quite a common situation, so worth checking first if you are thinking of exploring it.
  • Not yet as I don't think I'll get an answer now until after Christmas.

I need to properly understand what I'm asking for before I do... Then to find out who I need to speak to. This is like learning a new language for me!
