I can only assume that TVL are strapped for cash and not pursuing as vigorously as they once was.
Maybe they're preparing for their annual "check out the universities" project, where they park those ridiculous vans up on campuses etc.
Don't know if it's still the case, but the vans used to tour Armed Forces barrack block sites.  One evening, as soon as the van cleared security, the orderly Sergeant broadcast on the tannoy system that the van was on site and that all personnel were to have their tv licences ready for inspection......
  • I spoke too soon. The offending letter just arrived for the Legal Occupier.
Never mind; at least I know that my home is on the database.

Legal Occupier?????!! They do try and make them as intimidating as possible.

Unless, of course, if you are squatting you don't need a licence...

I was somewhat bemused to have a request for payment delivered recently addressed to my MiL who died 2 months before the renewal date.  Fairly certain I had already gone ahead and got a license in my name instead.  It had only been in MiL's name as when we first all moved in together it meant it was free, obviously that changed subsequently.    But it does make me wonder how good a system Capita has to cross match addresses for accounts.  If we have a license at our address but MiL doesn't at our address why would she need to renew??  Why didn't "tell us once" not something through to a quasi government agency to say she was dead???  Oh I do hope they keep sending her notices - I shall have great fun with them!!!

Difficult to prosecute someone if you don't have an address to send the prosecution paperwork and anyway squatters don't buy licences. Who's going to chase around trying to find a squatter who has moved on.  Even Capita wouldn't be so daft would they?

I think the problem for the BBC is data protection. If they maintained a list of who lives where they would have to tell people about the list and be open to complaints about any wrong data, only keep meaningfull data, etc. Even the BBC wouldn't  be so daft would they?

My point was the letter was addressed to the legal occupier, not the Occupier. Obviously TVL trying to.make is as official.as possible. So a squatter wouldn't be the legal.occupier so ... oh forget it.

I wouldn't bother trying to read anything into TV Licensing letters - they are designed simply to deceive and threaten the Public.   Each letter probably contains at least a dozen statements that aren't true.

They are a national shame and a shameful waste of resources.

Are there actually anything in them that is untrue?  I know that "you must have a TV license" (assuming they say that) is not correct as there's lots of people who don't have TVs.  But other than that?

I like that BBC doesn't have commercial advertising (just a lot of inhouse ads) but don't think I'd be much bothered if they did have ads like other stations.  Maybe do as Netflix where you can pay a subscription to have a non ad version?  As long as they don't switch to the fund raising that PBS is the USA has - so very very annoying.
