  • I am at the end of my tether with my noisy toilet and before I bite the bullet and call out a plumber (Not moneysaving!!) I wondered if anyone here can help?

I have a close-coupled toilet and when its flushed, on refilling the cistern, it rumbles (airlock sound). When I turn on the cold water bath tap in a quick blast this stops the rumble. The cold tap in the wash hand basin doesn't help nor does leaving the cold bath tap running?

This started when I redecorated the bathroom and had new flooring laid. The old flooring was sticky tile wood effect planks that were fitted under the toilet pan. I removed these by unscrewing the pan from the floor and had a bit of wiggling around to get the stuck flooring out. We noticed that there was a leak (don't know if it was there before or not, although I did always seem to think the floor was never dry!) behind the toilet, and further investigation noticed that on flushing that the water was coming out at the wing nuts below the cistern. These were loose so I tightened them, this has resolved the leak.

The noise isn't as bad if the toilet is flushed whilst you are sitting on it (don't ask how this was discovered! :o ).

The only other thing to mention is that the toilet is now securely fastened to the floor and my lovely new flooring has been laid and sealed all around it, so I really really can't move it??

also the bathroom is upstairs so I don't want to break something completely and cause a flood through to the downstairs!!!

    Any advice welcome,
p.s. I am a complete novice at anything diy especially, plumbing.

  • Well I sorted my problem myself!!

It was the washer thingy inside the arm bits of the ball lever thing. :rotfl:... I even mastered the techy jargon!

What a relief to have a quite flushing toilet :j

  • Hi i have a combi boiler which is about 6 years old. Ever since we moved in 5 years ago we have had probelms with it. It continuely loses pressure and therefore stops working so it has to be topped up again with water. The pressure relieving value has been changed a few times but it still does the same. It sounds like there is a lot of air in the system and every time we top it up to 0.9 bars and put the heating on it shoots up to over 2 bars and water comes out the pipe outside. Then the pressure drops over say an hour to under 0.5 bars and the boiler stops working and we have to top it up again It is a nightmare. The system has been flused out as well. Another thing that has happen recently is that we only get luke warm water through the bath taps upstairs but the other sinks and basins are ok. Have turned the hot tap down to a slow trickly but it still stays lukewarm. Please can you give me some advice as am at my wits end. Thanks
  • The cold water tap on bath has been tempremental for a while now,its not letting any water out however atm,i know this can prob be sorted with a new washer and a squirt of DD40 BUT i can get the top bit off the tap to get to the screw to remove tap head, its a fairly new tap am i misssing something obvious?
  • Have just found this forum and am now registered. Have recently been viewing other plumbing forums looking for advice (mainly Screwfix) and mostly have received abuse and very little help. So, to see some sound and unbiased help is very encouraging. I frequently scour the net for programming advice and find the open and helpful nature of the advice given to be totally the opposite to some of the views from the afore mentioned forum.

Help! - I've had to remove the Surrey Flange on my domestic h/w cylinder and I can't find source for a replacement green fibre washer that seals the flange to the cylinder. Can any help?
The old washer measurements are: 43mm o/d and 33mm i/d which I think is BSP 1" size.
Tried to find a supplier for this but failed.

    thanks

  • I have recently turned off the water supply at the tank in the loft in order to see how easy it would be to removed sink / toilet / bath to replace tiled bathroom floor. When I turned the water supply back on everything works fine in the main bathroom but there is no cold water supply to the en-suite, either the toilet cistern or the cold water tap in the sink.
  • Firstly apologies lack of knowledge with regards to CH.

My Overflow pipe is triping into the garden and is getting worse, It only leaks when the CH/CW is on.

I have looked up in the loft where i have two tanks Large and small. the overflow is coming from the small tank (expanstion tank??)

it looks like the water is flowing in from the inlet at the bottom of the tank and not the Ball valve.

I have emptied some water out down to about 6" above the inlet but the first time on turned the CH back on about 10mins later the overflow started again.
Appreciate any advice on most likely cause, and possible solution
    Many thansk

  • Hi I am getting rid of my old boiler and getting a new combi boiler. The builder said he would flush the radiators but I don't think he did it. He says they were clean. They are almost 20 yrs old and i now some of them were cold at the bottom hot at the top. How can I make sure he kept his promise and he cleans them all. He says they were clean when they got rid of the water but I don't believe him. Pls help...
