VAT Charge @ Poundland

Till operators don’t look at a receipt to see what change is due, it’s on their screen and change would be given before the receipt is even printed. So I really think you are reading it incorrectly as everyone else is saying. Your receipt clearly shows the total payable as £4.25, and change of £5.75 from a £10 payment.1

I suspect the till operator is deliberately skimming off a pound here and there on cash transactions.

On a £4 bill? Seems unlikely. Most people’s mental arithmetic would notice that.outtatune said:I suspect the till operator is deliberately skimming off a pound here and there on cash transactions. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
£1.50 though. Does that seem at all likely, or even worthwhile? Especially in the sort of chain store where the staff are no doubt carefully monitored. Bit different from "no, that was only a tenner you gave me" etc.outtatune said:I suspect the till operator is deliberately skimming off a pound here and there on cash transactions.0 -
OP hasn't been back - wondering if they've realised their own error.....

Even when I worked in a supermarket forty years ago that would have been easily picked up as they counted and balanced the cash in the till with the end-of-shift totals on the register. Now with far less cash changing hands and more up to date tills I think it woudl be far more obvious. I think it far more likely that the OP is simply mistaken, and in looking at their receipt later has mis-read 'Change' for 'Charge' and come her to complain.

Like others have said - unlikely.outtatune said:I suspect the till operator is deliberately skimming off a pound here and there on cash transactions.
The till operator will be looking at the till display which tells them how much change to give.
They would need to make a decision on how much to skim off and hope the customer doesn't notice.
And then take the difference out of the till so the till balances and pocket it.
Hardly seems worth the risk for a couple of quid.
More likely user error (i.e. the original poster not taking notice of change given and looking at the till receipt later and misunderstanding what it says).

At least the OP checked her receipt if not her change. I wasn't certain if anybody did that these days.
Last month I made two purchases (one was clothing at M&S and the other was some items from Sainsburys) and when I checked my receipts after purchase I realised that for one item on each receipt I'd been charged more than the display price. Both stores refunded me but on both occasions I was given the excuse that prices were going up so quickly and had only changed again a couple of days previously that the display prices must not have been updated.
I wonder how many people routinely end up paying more than they expected?0 -
I always do both, although it's rare that I pay in cash anymore.Manxman_in_exile said:At least the OP checked her receipt if not her change. I wasn't certain if anybody did that these days.

I check my receipt before I leave the store.0
