VAT Charge @ Poundland
MMonroe
I bought a couple of things at Poundland today that came to £4.25. However, when I went to the till I was charged £5.75 (70p VAT charge) was included on the receipt. I was wondering why I was charged VAT separately and not included within the price of the items as this has never happened before. Have I been conned?

You havent been charged it separately... the items add up to £4.25 and you've been charged £4.25 and they've given you £5.75 change from your tenner.
For those doing a VAT return and thinking they can expense their chocolates they've conveniently listed what the total VAT was7 -
No, you are reading your receipt incorrectly. The price of your goods was £4.25, inclusive of VAT.
Your change from a £10 note was £5.75.
If the till operator took £5.75 from you, then yes, you have been cheated.I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.

I was charged £5.75. Hence wondering why VAT was not included in the price I was charged.-1

So till operator made a mistake then, as it clearly states £5.75 CHANGE on receipt.😶🌫️MMonroe said:I was charged £5.75. Hence wondering why VAT was not included in the price I was charged.Life in the slow lane3 -
Even if it hadnt £4.25 + 70p is £4.95 not £5.75MMonroe said:I was charged £5.75. Hence wondering why VAT was not included in the price I was charged.
The receipt is very clear that your change from £10 was £5.75
It sounds like a simple cash handling error by them or you in counting the (two) pound coins0 -
VAT was included in the price you should have been charged.MMonroe said:I was charged £5.75. Hence wondering why VAT was not included in the price I was charged.
Are you absolutely sure you paid £5.75?
It's clear from the receipt that you bought 4 items:
3 @ £1.25 and 1 @ £1.00.
That totals £4.75.
You then had a saving of 50p for multibuy, giving an amount due of £4.25.
You gave £10.00 in cash and should have received £5.75 in change.
If you didn't, what did the assistant say when you queried it?
Your sum doesn't add up

Not £5.75.0 -
So neither you nor the checkout operator was seemingly able to interpret the receipt correctly? To be fair, there isn't much differentiation between the total and the other lines, so if you feel it's worth the effort of pursuing, you could perhaps complain to Poundland regarding the potential for confusion if just casually glancing at it....MMonroe said:I was charged £5.75. Forget about the VAT. It's nothing to do with VAT. Your bill was £4.25 as clearly stated on the receipt *ie.Total including VAT". If you received less than £5.75 in change then the checkout assistant made a mistake and you can go back to poundland to ask about it because the till would have been out.MMonroe said:I was charged £5.75. I find it odd that any staff member would look at the receipt to work out how much to charge a customer & not the nice display they have on tills saying how much, & then how much the change would be from the amount tendered.Life in the slow lane9

Thats not what your receipt says.MMonroe said:I was charged £5.75. Hence wondering why VAT was not included in the price I was charged.0
