Sorry Twink. Have just reread your thread and realised that I only half answered it! [rushing as was due back to work]. The original recipe only had 2oz sugar which I didn't quite find sweet enough but I think with less sugar they'd be fine with cheese.

thats good of you to get back to me thanks, will give the biscuits a go
Littletinker, i am sure the semolina is fine but best quality scottish shortbread is just butter, flour and sugar0 -
Scottish shortbread usually contains some other 'flour' type ingredient, such as semolina, cornflour, ground rice......it helps the biscuit to be melt in the mouth as opposed to a harder biscuit.0

i live up the road from Walkers shortbread factory and they pride themselves on just using real butter, flour and sugar, if the wind is in the right direction the smell is lovelyFather was a baker to trade too and thats all he used

Proud to be dealing with my debts0 -
It's that time of year again & I have been forced (co-erced) into making cakes for the school fair tomorrow.
I have some biscuit cutters, & wanted to make some nice shapes, but am struggling to think of a recipe that makes nice firm cuttable biscuits.
I have horrid morning sickness & want to spend as little time as possible in the kitchen, but need to deliver these to the school this afternoon.
Help0 -
Can anyone suggest a nice biscuit recipe?
Ideal for the kids to use cutters on
Many thanks0 -
There's an earlier thread on making biscuits with a cutter that should help so I've added your post to it to keep the replies together.

3oz caster sugar
4oz butter
1 beaten egg
6oz plain flour
Cream the butter and sugar, add the flour and mix well. Add enough egg to make stiff paste. Knead well and roll out to 1/4" thick. Cut your shapes and bake in a moderate oven until pale brown. I make a hole with a skewer in the shapes before baking for hanging on the tree.
You can also add some vanilla essence or lemon rind/ a teaspoon of ground ginger or chocolate power for different flavours.Never look down on anyone unless you are bending to help them up.....0 -
