This might explain the change in my rates then.
Eon have changed my day rates from 39p to 30p. Kept my night rate same to 13p.
    That seems extremely cheap.
Yes. I am on a fix so maybe that has been brought in to account? Originally my fix was 39p day and 24p night then in Oct they changed the night rate only and kept my day rate the same.

This new change is good for me as my property is a mix of storage/panels and with the cold snap I'm having to use the panel for a 30 minute here and there during on peak for my daughters room as it drops so low in temp and before bed so pleased with the new rate.

Yes, being on a fix could explain it. Basically, the maximum allowable discount on fixes goes up on 1 Jan.
  • I got an email from Bulb today - my economy 7 tariff is going up by about 8% in January - that's for both the day rate and the night rate. The night rate will soon be more than I was paying on the day rate a year ago!
  • According to Martin and MSE information the increase at Jan 1 was meant to be trivial for most users.
for 1st of October my increase was £284.11 and for 1st of Jan it will be a further £188.54 which is not trivial to myself.
I am with Shell energy and their rates are increasing to (from) on 1st of Jan
    Day 43.469(40.957) p/unit
    Night 20.268(17.757) p/unit
    SC 49.17 (49.17) p/day
I use 3637 day and 1498 night ie 29% night 71 % day.  Given that  DUNSTONH states "The market is still competitive with economy 7 users." can someone suggest an alternative that might be more economic for myself given that my night time usage is modest compared with some of the users here.

  • I am with BG and after putting up with not being billed on a dual tariff for E7 I finally had a conversation with a really helpful agent and together we worked out I am actually better off on the single tariff.
We have agreed a new figure for my DD  and I will pay any excess monthly when I submit meter readings.
I am happy with this as instead of building up a credit balance (which they tell me is the instruction they have to follow) I get to control my own money properly.
So please don't assume all energy providers ae poor and inflexible.  They are not.
    Good luck.
By the way, as an ex maths teacher I do actually understand how to work my bill out for myself whatever the tariff!!

It certainly doesn't feel trivial. My night rate is up over 16% in January, day rate is also up by a small amount. Our usage is 65% night rate over the year, so that's a very significant increase - around £400 for the year. It feels like E7 users are being worked over.
EonNext say that the increase will be around £170, but they are suddenly underestimating the night units on the annual projection. Why, I have no idea - we have lived here nearly 23 years with the same supplier, so they should have the hang of it by now.

That MSE article was looking at the relatively small shifts in the Ofgem tables for dual fuel customers - i.e. Single Rate electric and gas.  These were often sub 0.5p.

And that covers everyone apart from - at least a couple of years ago - around 4m (of approx 28m in UK) homes who have complex metering as EOn called it - dual or even triple rates like E7, E10, radio telemetry switched etc.

And in some regions the Ofgem dual rate tables have increased more - IIRC here it used to be 2p cheaper than average cf SR - now IIRC slightly above.

My own - legacy EOn E10 (not E7) have just sent me new prices today - and they are also up

    Day   42.3p   to 44.5p /kWh - up 5.4%
    Night 20.35p to 22.6p /kWh - up 11%

    Am I surprised - No.

But I use a lot off peak - and my average unit rate - and I look at that regularly when prices change - is below the SR EPG price.

    E7 and Lower Night usage

Your low night usage - means you are likely paying slightly more overall to be on E7.
The old nominal split for E7 pricing has I think been stated in other posts here as 58 % day, 42% night - so you are close.

With the 43/20p & 71% day/29% night split - I think this means you are paying c 36.7p on average - which is maybe a few p higher than typical Single Rate EPG rates - depending on region.

Do you have past years splits - or just an estimate off of current bill ?
You tried any comparison sites - with your actual usage ?
Does your provider tell you they have a cheaper deal on your bills - possibly a SR tariff  ?

It's not like you arent using any E7 - just not quite enough to benefit from off peak rate.
Can you switch some use - washing machine / dishwasher, electric showering/breakfast into E7 off peak times - to increase night use ?

  • Scot, that you passed on your own info about rates for Eon was great. If others can advise their new rates that would help.

Background advice - I am part of that ignored group who have no mains gas.  So for the years the green surcharge has been applied to electricity and not gas, I have in effect subsidised consumers of gas whose price differential with electricity means the Govt have actually encouraged use of a fuel with a greater mean CO2 burden per kWh in the name of reducing CO2 consumption.

My electricity  usage ratio and usage is based on the mean of the last 4 years usage. We do not have electrical heating. For decades I have had the dishwasher and washing machine only go on overnight, and I am at the max I can.Back in the 90s when night was 2.65p a unit and day was 8.66p, the advantage of an E7 meter was good.  In the last decade it has been marginal.  I think that after over 30 years of E7 I may need to switch to a single rate tariff.  Then they will want to get me to have a smart meter and control system so that they can switch my dishwasher off during the day and run it at the night because it is more economic for them!

  • Your energy supplier is not going to take over and remote control your dishwasher.

Could you provide some evidence for this claim please - it seems a little* extraordinary.

    *far-fetched beyond any reality.
