That is crazy, it would make the ROI on storage less than two years, potentially less than a year.
  • I think it may be a typo, out of line with all their other prices, but who knows? The EPG has thrown up various anomolies in E7 pricing. Keep in mind that although E7 users biased towards night time usage have seen a big advantage in % terms so far, as the underlying prices start to go down and the EPG discount reduces (to make the average bill £3000 instead of £2500) the opposite will be true. E7 night time users will see prices go up more rapidly in % terms so it will probably even itself out (but to what extent depends on the suppliers' pricing policies).

Here is the underlying tariff card (i.e. without the EPG discounts).  97p day rate anyone?

Good giddy god. It would be significantly cheaper to just run a generator.

This now means that my day rate has jumped to 41p  yes 41p.   That means ive now to turn into nosferatu for i just cant afford to use anything through the day.

It is perhaps better to view tariffs like E7 by your average price paid over the year - and not the individual day or night rate - unless you are at one extreme or the other - they tend to balance out (*).

Whilst it is good to think about shifting what you reasonably can to cheaper times, it is not worth taking it to extremes or stressing about the day rate in isolation.

The whole point of E7 is that is primarily designed to suit those who use a reasonable amount (*) at cheaper rates.

Look at your annual usage - (bear in mind you might be cutting back on heating cf previous winters due to costs etc - so try to factor that in too) - and see if it is worth staying on E7 if the 41p remains a major stumbling block.

My E10 tariff (not E7) day rate went up 10p in Oct - it's already at c43p effective (c61p pre the 17.85p discount) - still awaiting the Jan figures.

To me all that really matters - is the average unit rate paid.

And for me - that currently runs below the SR EPG c3Xp (in my region) on my annual use in any case - and especially so in cold snaps like now - several pence below.

(*) The nominal break point quoted by some more knowlegable with E7 rules is iirc 42% night - in the days before EPG. That seems to hold whether e.g. in SS with EDF where E7 at 47/16p or in EM with EDF at 52/6p after EPG discounts.

But note from EDF tables and some other users posts - these rates appear very regional - at least with some - if not all - suppliers.

If it was possible to switch to pre-payment and move on to that tariff instantly then it would be a no-brainer for anyone with home batteries. Unfortunately it's far more challenging and, once you're on pre-payment, it's difficult to get off again.

I look forward to the day when you can buy your energy in advance from your choice of suppliers, including community owned wind farms and even groups of solar panel owners etc.

That is spot on.    On my spreadsheet, I have recorded the meter readings taken on the same day every month for the last 4 years.   I include a couple of columns that have the total units priced at the current single rate tariff to allow me to compare.    Only in four months of the last 48 did the single rate beat the dual rate.

Information and knowing your data is key.

  • This might explain the change in my rates then.
Eon have changed my day rates from 39p to 30p. Kept my night rate same to 13p.

    That seems extremely cheap.
