Car warranty refused turbo

Hi
my daughter bought a second hand car last February. She took out RAC warranty at the time. 4 weeks later it started with problems. The car dealer took it in and fitted a new turbo, no need to use the RAC warranty.
Then October 7 months later it started again, she phoned the dealer up again who couldn’t fit her in she had no idea it was the turbo again. She was going away the next day so got it booked in at another garage hoping it to be fixed upon return the next week. It was the turbo again. RAC refused warranty claim as it states The failure or breakdown of any part which is under suppliers warranty.
So now after 4/5 weeks in a garage both refusing to accept claim
car dealer says it’s wear & tear as she’s done 10 thousand miles since new turbo in.
The garage refurbished the turbo ti get the cost down to 1k.
Any advice on what to do next?
Thank you

So it was a used turbo and the garage are saying 10K miles was all that could be expected from it.  Based on the original purchase, she's had ten thousand miles out of a used car before a part has failed, as she didn't pay for the turbo, I would imagine all they are under any obligation to give her is a turbo in line with the general age and condition of the vehicle.

Did the garage that fitted the turbo give any guarantee with it?  If not then the part is not under suppliers' warranty and that's not grounds for the RAC to refuse.
However, does the RAC warranty cover wear and tear on parts?  I think the top end does, but not all.  Which one does she have?

  • What can she do next?  Pay to have a used or new turbo fitted, and enjoy the car.  I can't see that she has a valid claim against the dealer or the RAC.  The garage fixed the first problem, replacing a used turbo with another used turbo. The RAC warranty terms seemingly don't apply to the part, so unless you can find something in their warranty terms to show they are obliged to act, they aren't doing anything wrong.

Thank you for the reply’s. The turbo fitted was a brand new one. Surely it shouldn’t have broke within that time regardless of the 10k miles , thy said if in 6 months it would have been under their warranty for new parts
sorry if I didn’t explain that bit before.
We have no idea with cars & I just wanted to make sure my daughter isn’t being fobbed off.
    Thank you

Akysbury Duck.. she has had the turbo refurbished. It was a brand new turbo that the car dealer fitted for her that’s why the RAC are saying it should be down to them if it was a brand new one.
    Thanks
  • A turbo should last a lot more than 10k miles unless it is an ultra high performance one, on most vehicles they should last the life of the vehicle. As an example my Golf has a turbo and a supercharger, both factory fit, neither replaced and the car is 13 years old and has done 90k miles.

Too much play, meaning it moved around? So either they did not fit it correctly or fitted the wrong one. Might be worth having someone else look at it, as well as checking the part number against what should be fitted.

So who has refurbished it, a  second garage?  .  Did the second garage say it needed refurbishing after six months?  So is it running now and it is the cost of refurbishnig that you are looking to claim?

    Age, mileage when bought?
    Petrol or diesel?

If petrol. Hope it's had a service as Kia Spec is 10K miles or 12 months which ever is 1st. So if not serviced, then that is a valid reason for refusal of claim.

it's a new turbo fitted seven months ago; not sure how Kia service history is relevant either to that or to an RAC warranty.
