Neighbour on a different road putting signs up outside my house.

We live on a road on which lots of roads come off it. We’re the last house on the road before it turns into a different name.
One of our neighbours who lives on the corner of a perpendicular road has just put a sign up saying the name of his house and his street name underneath the number. He’s put it at the side of his house by his side gate, so it’s opposite our house. It now says the wrong street name on our road. It’s causing a right pain for delivery drivers as they assume it’s no longer our road.
I haven’t spoken to him yet, but wanted to know if i had a leg to stand on anyway!
Thanks in advance for your advice!

It is an offence to put up a sign on or near a highway without the consent of the highway authority and/or which is misleading to users of the highway. They can put up a sign on their private property, but it mustn't mislead highway users. If the sign isn't clear enough to indicate only that the side gate is his address then I'd say that is likely to be misleading.5

They do have a gate there, but it makes it seem like it’s on the wrong road.2 delivery drivers have commented on it this week. And we had a parcel go missing (eventually found) due to it.I think it would be classed as misleading.I’ll contact the council. Thank you!0 -
I assume that it is one of those slate or plastic signs that are affixed to most houses nowadays rather than a sign that is trying to replicate a street sign.I don’t think that they are being unreasonable and my advice would be that you look at getting one for your property. The council may advise that the sign should be on the house rather than the wall but I don’t think that they will take action.1

Any delivery driver that can't find your house these days is not trying.
Try something like this UPRN search, address & postcode finder - FindMyAddress
It shows every house on a map and is probably the most up to date database available.
Not all address databases are correct though, almost every time the Amazon delivery man comes he tells me "my database says your house is 100 yards down the road from here" Quite what he expects me to do about it I don't know.

Shouldn't it be on their gate?HollyC123 said:

If you can, please post a pic, take out the details,
However, if you can't, ring the council tomorrow and ask to speak to the highways
department and take it from there.
When the sign is taken down and it will be. I'm safely guessing they will blame you.
However, they've won't be certain unless you admit to it so be prepared.
If they had asked your consent it may have been more acceptable or placed in a different area.

For anyone concerned that the neighbour will identify who has complained, Highways Department staff don't tend to be in the office very much, particularly highway engineers. It's their job to be out and about in their area, on site visits, inspecting existing highways, pavements and footpaths. There's every likelihood that one of them might have spotted such an unauthorised sign and then taken the necessary steps to advise the homeowner to remove it. From the OP, it seems as though the sign itself identifies the homeowner so it's hardly a case for Sherlock Holmes to find out who to hold responsible. In any event, Highways Department staff have easy access to the electoral roll and the public Council Tax register if they need to find a name to write to.

Thanks.
I know that but as you said it does not take a Columbo to find out who reported them but at times the most obvious person is not the culprit as we all know.
Best time to report stuff like that is when someone else has been moaning about something then complaining and withholding your name is what I have done.
We had a call once and a mate from housing was telling me it was someone he knew complaining about his mate down the road, lol.
The bottom line if you dont want to be found out - never give them your real details as you are not lying so you have nothing to fear. If challenged, "was it you inti, mate.." - Just say, I know where you live and I would have knocked on your door to tell you to your face. That trips them up, trust me, lol.
Thanks
