Samsung Galaxy S phones

I have a 4 year old Galaxy S8 Plus. It's time to change it for a more modern one. I don't want the latest gadgets, I'm happy with older models.

I've been looking on the Samsung website, and they have Galaxy S20 and S22 phones.  Is there a great difference between these? The FE 5G model seems cheaper than the others - is this phone OK? What does FE mean?

I don't really want to do any complicated photographs or videos, but I would like the 5G facility so that I can use this in due course. I usually keep my phones for about 4 years, so 5G will probably be common by then.

I use my phone mainly for browsing websites, WhatsApp, emails and I'm old enough to still use old-fashioned phone calls. It's also good to have some storage so I can access my Dropbox files. My Galaxy S8 also has Word and Excel built in so that I can open and print files, which is useful.

Any thoughts on these options? Should I get the S20 FE 5G for £599, or the S22 5G for £769? I've used the 'compare' button on the Samsung website, but don't really understand all the technical stuff.

The  Samsung A52 5G or A53 5G will give you all that but for under £250 in the case of the former and around £300 for the latter. Good battery life also.

What's the difference between the A and the S ranges? I've always had S phones.

I've had a look at the reviews for the A53 5G, and it seems great. Can you remind me how I connect it to my phone number? I'm on a contract with 3. Do I have to contact 3 to get another SIM card?

If the a53g uses a different size SIM card to your current phone then yes, if not no.

Your S8 Plus uses a nano sim which is the same size as used by the A53 5g.

Simply take the sim out of the old phone and put it in the new one.

If you use WhatsApp make sure you back up the files on your old phone (using the WhatsApp backup feature) before starting the switchover process in order to retrieve them onto your new one.

Use the Samsung switch app to move everything else across. It works extremely well.

You may need to get a 5G ready sim though if you want to use 5G (as well as possibly making sure that 5G is enabled for your account). I know that I had to on O2.

S range are top of the range and A series mid range and very considerably cheaper. I couldn't stomach the four figures some of the newest S series phones are.

Going back to your original post there is no way I would pay £599 for an S20fe 5g. I bought one direct from Samsung some months ago for considerably less and they are continually having various cashback promotions on their phones.

From what you have said I would look at the A53 5g as this is the latest version and will come with quite a few years of android and security updates.

To give you an idea of what deals are available at the moment take a look at the Hotukdeals website.

    https://www.hotukdeals.com/

I prefer to use the app but the website should help give you an idea of what is available.

Re: your original post - if you want to stick with the S series then buy the S22 5G for £769 over the S20 FE (fan edition) for £599 - or even look at a S21 5G ie last year's model for around £500 or around £275 pre-owned.

Same position here with my Samsung Galaxy S7. I think I paid around £470 new back in 2017. Not too expensive for a top of the range phone.
I’d get a Samsung A series now if they weren’t so big. 6.5”+ screens seem to be the norm now.
