I would agree with others , limit your full display to maybe 2 hours per evening if you are worried about extra costs . If you are not worried then you carry on and tell anyone who wants to know that you do this each year for charity. Good luck , we need some sparkle and lights 🎄
  • Only you know if you can afford it or not. If you can and you want to do it this year I would do so, it would brighten up the lives of those who visit amidst all the doom and gloom we are fed every day, plus they know you give money they donate to charity

Personally I find these displays rather obscene. Sorry to be the Grinch. Just give a donation to charity. Wasting energy is stupid at the moment and your fans will have to find another source of joy but not at your expense
Each to their own. We rasise over £3000 each year during christmas for charity, so must be doing something right. Plus quite a few of us have solar PV.

And the majority of us don't.sorry but i work in one of the most impoverished areas of London where people genuinely struggle. I find these displays of .... Well whatever..... um wasteful.

It is a matter of individual choice to put up displays or not.
Correct.  It therefore doesn't matter whether someone else does or does not, can afford to or cannot afford to, or anything else.

Why then do you go on to apply a moral invective with "is it really to hard to cut down?".  It makes no difference if it is hard or not - if they choose to or choose not to, it is not our business.

At which point did you become the moral arbiter of what constitutes "wasting energy"?  Pretty much anything could be designated a waste if it just happens to be something the observer disagrees with. Have a car instead of a bike?  "Wasting energy".  Have the lights on in two rooms when you could all sit in one? "Wasting energy".  Using the heating when you could all huddle around a fire built from scavenged wood and junk mail?  "Wasting energy".
Phew .. people seem to be attacking me. Bear in mind that this is MSE so we are all about saving money. Why display silly lights. Christmas is a religious festival and it has been hijacked by commercialisation.
  • Wouldn’t it be great if solar PV worked in the dark ?!

Yeah and if unicorns existed too
  • Yes, you can still put up your Christmas Lights
Tiny Tim loves to see them
    ”God bless us, every one!”
  • In the words of the bard, Sheryl Crow: “if it makes you happy it can’t be that bad”. So plug in, turn on, and put a smile on everyone’s face.
  • I'd be surprised if you would spend more than a tenner's worth of electricity running a few led lights over the Christmas period so trying to shoehorn some type of moral dilemma into it seems a bit farfetched, but then the media needs to continue their "everyone is in crisis" narrative.

Maybe spend some of the council tax rebate and have some fun, or not if you so choose.

That's what batteries are for ;)
