For many years I've been putting up a display of Christmas lights in my garden, and I invite people in to see it in return for a voluntary donation, which I give to charity. I add to the display each year, so it's quite large and well known now, but I don't know whether to do it this year, as I'm worried about the cost [see MSE's Christmas lights cost analysis] and whether it's appropriate when some people can't afford to heat their homes. But if I don't, the families who come to see it and the charity will miss out.

Yes, but you should make sure that they are only on when you are at home, and it is dark outside.
Some people might think you are showing off that you can afford the extra energy to run the lights, but by managing the amount of time they are switched on, you and anyone that can see your lights can enjoy the Christmas spirit without it costing to much, and without you having to feel too guilty. The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0 -
If you can and want to then you should feel free to choose to do so.
Don't feel obligated, but certainly don't feel guilty either.
And ignore anyone else who thinks they can control your life.2 -
Visiting the "Christmas House" will be a part of the annual tradition for lots of your visitors. I'm sure it would be sadly missed if you decided not to go ahead this year.
I don't think you should worry if it's appropriate but maybe consider cutting down a bit, ditching the older (more expensive) lights and going with any LED displays you have, to cut your energy costs.Barnsley, South Yorkshire

As said, it's up to you. If that's what you want and can afford it then do it.
The bloke opposite us, goes a bit over the top and it's not very tasteful (I think he gets job lots from last year and bungs them up), but he's happy and we can put up with it for a few weeks, its Christmas after all.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
I don't even know my neighbours, let alone give a squished fig what they think about anything I choose to do - my tree is up in my loft, which is where it is staying right throughout Xmas and I don't expect to be judged on that choice any more than I would judge a neighbour for choosing to cover every inch of their house in lights.
I blame social media, its now given us a complex and the need to run every choice and decision passed our peers, craving some kind of acceptance for making them.
Do what YOU can afford to do, and let the locals worry about their own bills."Dont expect anybody else to support you, maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you have a wealthy spouse, but you never know when each one, might run out" - Mary Schmich5 -
I would say that going to visit Christmas lights has been a lovely tradition for us when we cannot afford to do the Christmas things we would like to do or decorate the way we would like.
So it would be a shame for others to miss out. I personally wouldn’t think you were showing off I would be grateful to be able to show something to my son

If you can’t afford it or cost would have detrimental effect on your family I’d say don’t do it.1

Days are gloomy for many at the moment. If you can afford to do it, go ahead and brighten up the dark days. Have a good Christmas.0

If you can afford it and it brings pleasure to people, plus it helps a charity, go ahead and do it. If the odd one or two consider it showing off, that is their concern, what you chose to spend your money on is up to you.0
