Hello .. just coming back in case anyone reads in future with similar problem.

I opened ebay this morning to find a return postage label waiting for me... i didnt need to do anything so assume ebay stepped in. Its off to the post this morning.
Yeah I was just going to pop in and say you'll have no issues. I listed something recently and described it as black in the specifics when it was actually dark blue - actual item was in the photos as was the label showing the colour it actually was and everything. I double checked with Ebay what the situation was on their chat function (more for curiosity than anything) and if the item specifics are wrong then a seller is going to have to refund. In the end I offered a partial refund and the buyer kept the item which worked for everyone.

The item specifics are 'automatically generated' to a certain extent but a buyer still has to often manually enter many of them and at the end of the day they have to confirm them when they submit the listing and are responsible for what they say.

The item specifics are all filled in by seller, the only time they come with pre filled is when a seller opts to ‘sell similar’either using their own or someone else’s listing. That’s where mistakes happen when sellers don’t check what was left in from a previous listing.

I've definitely had them partially pre-filled when I list things in the app. I think it takes information from the headline you type in and has a go at it... but obviously doesn't have everything that it needs and does make mistakes. So for example when I have listed CDs it will pick out a word as being the Artist but it may not be.

Of course you still have to then submit the listing with those specifics which are clearly shown so you should be checking them before hitting list.

Sadly eBay can prefill certain IS based upon the barcode and some of their data is incorrect, that obviously doesn't affect the buyer's ability to claim SNAD but given eBay encourages you to enter the barcode when listing items I can see why sellers wouldn't expect, or be happy, to take a hit because of eBay's incorrect data (but again this isn't the buyer's problem).

If you sell against a catalogue or using a bar code then yes it’s pre filled, in fact a box comes up asking whether you want to use the catalogue details or not. I used to sell a lot of books and was careful about checking the entries as towards the end of my book selling there were several mistakes, hard back books showing when it was in fact a paperback, and even changes to publisher.

If you don’t use a catalogue entry, and nowadays I sell a lot of vintage or non books or non CDs , then you fill your own details. I’ve been listing today and the only bits filled in are the search terms I use, so a vase would come up with vase already entered.

  • We're going back a long way now so they might of fixed it however what used to happen was you'd untick the box so the cat data wasn't used but any time you revised the listing it would tick itself and add all the fluff back in to the listing....

So for example yesterday I listed a CD with the word 'Heart' in the name of the album. So the listing heading was for example " ABC Music CD Artist XYZ Heart BLAH BLAH"

Ebay took that and added Heart as the artist. Which it wasn't. Not based on the barcode or anything. Simply based on my title. Of course I just go in and edit that to the correct information but it does happen that Ebay prefills things it 'thinks' it knows.
