Do I have this correct? If I want to turn off the pre heat, the button needs to be illuminated? If so, how come the boiler cuts it every now & again??

I keep my boiler in eco mode (ie not in hot water ready mode). However the boiler itself fires up every so often even when not in use as a safety feature to prevent the pump seizing up. It only runs for a very short burst & the cost is not measurable but it does prevent possible expense of a pump repair/replacement. Been there, done that in the past when I neglected to manually run a previous boiler once a month or so through summer & the pump seized.
It should be mentioned somewhere in your boiler user guide.1 -
If you want no preheat.... then you want no green light1

When ECO is active, the button is illuminated.
For all of those who have combis, if you find it a pain and find yourself waiting ages to get water at your tap, simply turn the tap on at a lower rate. This will signal the boiler to fire, consuming 20-30Kw as it does, the lower flow rate holds the water in the boiler longer and therefore picks up heat quicker and delivers it to the tap quicker.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..3 -
That would be good if if it was possible, my boiler Ideal Isar HE35 is set to pre-heat and cannot be turned off, doing some exercises by having it on as normal for a day and switching it off at the wall for a day makes a difference of 8kWh per day, thats £24 a month for nothing when you don't need any hot water.2

I have a different sized version of that boiler, but the buttons are identical.Eco mode = green light on = pre heat off.So you were spot on @northwest1965.If I have a power cut, even just a smidge of a second, I have to turn Eco mode back on again.1

My manual says
Pump anti-seize function
Every time the pump is switched off (after a demand) a timer starts and if after 24 hours the pump has not run again it is switched on for 10 seconds.
I only turn the boiler on when I want heating, otherwise it stays off, with just the hot water on demand functioning. My use of hot water from the boiler is erratic so I hear it jump into action every now and again as per above.0
