Currys insisting on personal details to process sale

good luck purchasing from Amazon or ebay without providing personal details such as home address, although you could I suppose get your items delivered to a false address ...0

But when buying in shop from Curry's there is no need for any personal details. Obviously, buying online is different.
Maplin used to ask for personal details but my husband always said 'you don't need it. They accepted that
Thry did admit it was for marketing purposes.

Yes you've consented, but there are further principles of purpose limitation and data minimisation.powerful_Rogue said:
Quite easily I would imagine. By giving your details your giving your consent for them having those details. Also a lot of shops do this now so if you lose your receipt and have an issue, they can pull your purchase history up.saajan_12 said:They can refuse the sale for any (non descriminatory) reason.
However from a GDPR perspective, not sure how they justify needing to retain this info for every physical sale..1 -

The only time currys ever insisted on my details was when I bought a new tv (yes I know, I was naive back then!), and they capture it for TV Licensing I think.Every other thing I've bought since its been a case of "can we send you an email receipt", and I politely decline as I dont need the spam.Peter

If they only ask "can we send you and email receipt" and you give an email address they cannot send you spam as they didn't ask for permission to do that, only to send the receipt.nyermen said:The only time currys ever insisted on my details was when I bought a new tv (yes I know, I was naive back then!), and they capture it for TV Licensing I think.Every other thing I've bought since its been a case of "can we send you an email receipt", and I politely decline as I dont need the spam.
Most stores stick to this rule and getting the marketing requires additional permission. Unfortuantly this is Currys we are talking about and they don't understand the data protection rules.0 -
When shopping in Dunelm they always ask if they can send a receipt by email. Answer 'no'. Not a problem#2 Saving for Christmas 2024 - £1 a day challenge. £325 of £3660

I've just come back from the USA where their chip and pin machines are small tablet style screens. Almost every store I shopped in from CVS to Macy's asked me to input email details and often phone numbers into them.
All stores were happy to accept a refusal of this, but I can see this coming over here soon.0 -
Again, if the question is only about a receipt and does not mention marketing, they cannot send you marketing emails. I get e-receipts from several stores and never get marketing emails from them.JGB1955 said:When shopping in Dunelm they always ask if they can send a receipt by email. Answer 'no'. Not a problem
In the US they often use phone numbers as loyalty accounts. Thats never cottoned on here, we use cards with unique numbers for each store. A few places are starting to use email for loyalty accounts, but it is rare. I don't see that changing. Also with the GDPR stuff you would need to tick a box to opt-in to marketing, in the US they don't have the same data protection laws as Europe.pulliptears said:I've just come back from the USA where their chip and pin machines are small tablet style screens.
