Carers Allowance

My husband spends a lot of time in bed as if he does anything i.e. walking he is absolutely shattered.  He has quite a number of illnesses, he takes 22 tablets a day.  He gets the low end of PIP and he applied for Carers Allowance and was told that as he gets PIP he cannot get Carers Allowance.  He has a disabled badge but was rejected at first because he does not get DLA but I appealed and put down all his illnesses and medication, he got his badge straight away.   Can I claim Carers Allowance?

He can't claim carers allowance for looking after himself.

If his PIP include daily living part and you care for him for at least 35 hours per week and you don't earn anymore than £132/week after deductions then you can claim carers allowance for looking after him. https://www.gov.uk/carers-allowance/eligibility
Do either of you claim any other benefits? if so which ones?

My mother got carers allowance when she was alive.  It was to pay for what she needed.

People only qualify for Carers Allowance if they are caring for someone else.  The disabled person doesn't get it for being disabled, that's what the disability benefit is for.

I agree with others that hubby can't get carer's allowance as he's not caring for anyone.  He may be entitled to attendance allowance.  OP may be entitled to carer's allowance but possibly not until hubby is getting AA.

Which husband would not be able to claim as they already receive PIP.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
  • My mistake it was Attendance Allowance

AA is for those of state pension age and above.
  • My husband is 72 years of age.   He gets the lowest payment of PIP.   He cannot get Attendance Allowance because he gets this.   It did not cover him getting a Blue Badge either, only awarded if you get the higher rate or DLA. His blue badge was only granted after he listed all his illnesses and all of the tablets he takes.  Since he was awarded PIP quite a few years ago, he has since been diagnosed with bowel cancer for the second time, atrial fibrilation and sclerosis of the liver due to portal hypertension and reflux.
