I've been told by the dealer we bought the car from that the car was originally registered under the private plate - so didn't have an original non plate allocated. Don't know if this is correct.

I think I'll wait until I sell it back to the original dealer (as they have offered the most), and then see if they can sort it out for me.

The private price doesn't have any real value for anyone else. I'm happy to cover some costs for them to sort out - if not, then will just sell it as is.

    Thanks for all the comments.

It would not have had a number "allocated to it" since prior to first registration (with the personal plate), DVLA would have been unaware of the car.

It's a very simple process to do online and the DVLA will issue an age related number and a retention certificate. Get new plates made up and swap over.

If you let the dealer do it "because it's easier" you have more chance of delays and cop ups.

I am completely ignorant to this type of process, but I would have thought "let the Dealer do it" would be the guaranteed way to lose the plate forever.

Absolutely, even the DVLA/gov website says

You must have your V778 and new log book before you scrap or sell your vehicle - otherwise you’ll lose the right to use the private number.

I also don't want to be held up selling it in 4 weeks time, waiting for the updated V5C. The way that I see it I can pay £80 for retention, £32 for new plates and potentially delay selling it while waiting (while still paying for insurance, VED etc), or just cut out the hassle and sell it with the current plate. Think I will just pick my battles at the moment.

Will still ask the dealer just in case it can be sorted out when selling, nothing lost - the front licence plate has a stone chip, so they will probably be replacing that plate anyway. As I said above, if they say no then I'll just leave it.
  • Just do the plate transfer online in advance of the sale. I did it 2 weeks before my new car was being delivered. If done online during office hours the swap over / allocation of a new reg number is instant. Then just get a set of plates made up (I used an Amazon seller and received within 2 days). It really is a painless process now,
  • As Tonygold suggests get it sorted now, dead easy to do online.  The only problem you have is having the plates made up and informing your insurance company of the plate change.

(I keep the old plates and just pop them back on, you don't have that luxury)

I don't understand this bit. You have time now but won't have later. Why would the dealer want to wait around for the new registration document before then making up plates etc. Best to do it now, it's a simple online form and easy process with Ebay/Amazon plate supplier. You seem to be creating a situation where the plate will be lost if you think the dealer has some magic wand he waves at the DVLA.

The Fat Controller has given the correct info. I've just done mine online - you'll get a new reg assigned and an authorisation letter emailed to take to the shop get new plates made up, as you might not get the V5 for a few weeks due to DVLA delays. It's not that difficult, honestly -you'll be fine.

My replacement V5 arrived within 3 working days !
