Private plate transfer
When I bought my wife's car I purchased a personalised registration, and the car was registered under that from new.
Now looking to change the car in about 6 weeks, but want to keep the personalised registration to use on the new car. Looks like a simple exercise to take off the private number (V778 retention document) and transfer to a new car.
But I don't have an original registration number for the car, as it was registered under the private plate from new.
Does anyone know the process for this? Have tried to call DVLA, but not getting through. I've started the process online to take the registration number off, but didn't want to get too far and end up not having a reg number for the car at all.
Will the DVLA automatically assign a new reg number (in the standard format of the year of registration) free or charge to the vehicle after I've gone through the process to take the private plate off?

That's what I'd expect.ComicGeek said:

Perhaps I'll just have to risk going through the whole process then. The wife's not going to be happy if I ground her car by getting it wrong though!NBLondon said:

I don't know if I'm overthinking this, but won't I then need to wait for the replacement V5C before I can get new plates made up and put on the car?NBLondon said:

I know nothing about transfer of private plates, but I just gave my old car away and the online transfer came up with a bold notice that the rights to the plate are lost immediately you do the car transfer. Whatever you do, you need to take the private plate from the car and assign random age-plate in sufficient time ahead of the car disposal.0

Let her do the work herself then!ComicGeek said:

Depending on how personalised it may be easier (for your life) just to let it go and get another...
So say
cg 68 mrs
change to
cg 72 mrs
if getting a brand new car.
Not really MSE, but a quiet life is well worth the cost 🤣Life in the slow lane0 -
To be honest, this is my preferred solution - but while it's not very personalised she does want to keep it. I can't let her sort it out, it will never happen and will end up not being able to sell it for months.born_again said:Depending on how personalised it may be easier (for your life) just to let it go and get another...

Next time I won't get the new car registered using it - I'll wait until the car's on the drive with the standard plate, and then I'll always have the physical plates to quickly change over.0 -
The car would originally have a number allocated ti it but you would not get notification of the number as the private plate was registered immediately,
You need to apply to take the plate off and put on retention.
DVLA will then advise of the number to put on the car, which is usually the original number.
You will need to get plates made with the new number to put on the car. before you sell it.
When you buy the next car - if it is new then , if you give the garage the retention certificate they will put it on the new car , as happened before.
if it is a car that is already registered then you would apply to change the number when you get the V5 for it.

You can do it all online and it is very easy, just make sure you go to the genuine website.
There is no need to walk to get the new plates made up, the form you receive as part of the process covers you.
The vehicle will be allocated an age appropriate registration.
Don't forget to tell your insurer, the DVLA and insurance databases can take a few days/weeks to update, keep a copy of the old and new V5s along with the new plate allocation letter in case you are stopped.
