Does anyone know what DWP PSCS refers to?

If you've ever tried to locate the meaning of codes used by the government on bank statements and coupled that with a slow postal service then you may understand my raising this question. It's sort of frustrating getting a payment into an account and not knowing what it is and whether it should be sent back or not!

I sadly lost my husband 6 weeks ago but today found a payment in my bank referencing his NI number and the code DWP PSCS and I've no idea what it is! He didn't get any benefits other than his pension so confused. Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks guys and I apologise if I've put this in the wrong category.... there are so many!

Automatic coding of state pension from automated daily interface from DWP. From 23 July 2012, NPS (National Insurance and PAYE Service) will receive new and revised state pension award notifications through an automated daily interface feed from the DWP PSCS (Pension Strategy Computer System).13 Apr 2016

not that that actually seems very helpful.

is it something to do with the winter allowances that all people over a certain age get even if they don't get benefits?

def not HMRC as they will send a cheque if too much tax has been paid.

sorry for your loss.  there's a lot to sort out and a whole maze of things to get through.

Could it be that he qualified for Winter Fuel Payment and they have now directed it to you instead?  If he died after 19 September he would have qualified (I think).

Thank you for your thoughts. However, the amount doesn't equate to Winter Fuel Payment, that's lost in the wind at moment! No doubt it will be a couple more months for that to get returned from a frozen bank account for them to then query it...

Thanks for taking the time the time to look. I couldn't find anything but was using a different search engine. Seems the most likely explanation although I think they will probably try and get it back given the timings. If I don't hear anything from them I will give them a ring in a couple of days.

Thank you all for your help.

Could it be arrears of his State Pension? It's normally paid in arrears so could some still be due?
  • I found these discussions.  I don't know if they are at all relevant though:

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3942831/pscs-payment-from-dwp

and another short thread on another site  (so I won't post the link), but it was titled

    DWP LIB and Attendance Allowance

    2 AUGUST 2019, 03:07 PM

which I found on a well known privacy-centered search engine  (quack quack!) by entering search term: dwp lib

Sorry that title is so large - it was pasted from the thread and I couldn't see how to reduce it.

    stinker ...

  • If you say how much it was for, someone might be able to clarify what it's for eg £326 is the second cost of living, £300 is pension CoL etc.

My condolences for your loss, if you need support with what to do the death and funerals board are very helpful.

Depending on your income / benefits, you may be entitled to some assistance towards his funeral, even if it's already taken place.

Thanks for your input. The amount was an odd one and nothing that relates to what you mention. Think MikeJXE has hit the nail on the head. Dealing with government 'helplines' is not easy at the best of times but fortunately 50% of those I've spoken to have been kind.
