Paint - Quality ÷ Price = Value

Afternoon all

Looking to smarten the house up ahead of Christmas, and need your thoughts on paint.

Whole of the downstairs is currently white, and frankly that's how we like it. Just need to freshen things up, and hide the greying effects of the past 10 years, since it was done.

I want a decent quality paint, but given the area I need to do I need it as cheap as I can get it.

Am hoping you'll tell me that, because I am covering existing paint with the same colour, I can get away with Happy Shopper own-brand

So... Which paint to I want, and where do I want to buy it from?

Dulux - 10 litre tubs...normally the DIY sheds have it cheap.

If you just want flat matt emulsion then look at getting some of the big trade tubs, eg, Johnsons, Armistead. Go to one of the paint trade places rather than your local B&Q or Homebase.

I've used Dulux trade Armistead for ceilings and had a good finish.

Crown Trade extreme scrubbable matt is very good and gives good coverage. It'll be more expensive than the Crown stuff you get in B&Q but the quality is much better and you'll get better coverage.

If you ask nicely at your local Crown decorator centre, you can usually get a 20% discount

So no-one is telling me to buy Wilko's of B&Q's own-brand - and several are recommending 'trade' versions...

I thought this place was all about saving money

Oh well.... Looks like it's Dulux from B&Q, then...

Have done a bit of an online search, and the prices are virtually the same everywhere. Was hoping that B&M or Home Bargains might save me some money.

It is about saving money.  The really cheap paints don't cover as well, so you end up using more of it.   You end up tired and haven't saved anything.

If your walls were painted 10 years ago you will be surprised at how different a colour they will be to brilliant white.

"Buy cheap, pay dear" is a phrase that often rings true when it comes to DIY.   There are different ways of saving money (like the suggestions to buy massive tubs from the trade outlets and ask for a discount), but don't compromise on quality.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

By all means buy the cheapest paint you can find. Don't expect to get anywhere near the coverage it says on the tin though and don't complain when it rubs off the wall at the slightest scuff. I'll be honest, I used to do the same myself but after years of being a tight yorkshire man, I've learned that some things you have to spend more on.

Good decorators use trade paint for a reason - the coverage is much better (I can water most trade paints down by about 5% which really helps with coverage and giving a nice smooth finish), it's more durable so they are less likely to get called back if it's been scuffed after a couple of weeks.

You asked for quality and good value, not false economies 😉

    I know!

    I know!

    I know!

Have been caught out with cheap paint in the past, so am well aware of the false economy of it.

Was just hoping that someone would point me towards somewhere selling Dulux cheaper than elsewhere - or suggest Brand X as a cheaper (but equal quality) option.
