Hi new to this do do forgive me if this has been answered. How do you get the government energy support if you have a secondary meter? Ie landlord owns the meter?

Unfortunately you don’t, the landlord does. It’s up to him to share it out amongst the tenants. How many of you are there?

    hi steve.

it depends on the arrangement. if your rent is including bills then the goverment were working on a law to make it so landlord have to pass on the money.

if you have a sub meter (so pay an electric bill but to your landlord) then it can be more complicated as your not automatically entitled at the moment to the 400

depending on if you landlord is on a comercial tarrif or not they might not even get it. or they might get one lot of 400 and have several tenants all on sub meters. if you see what i mean? in that situation you can ask (nicely) your landlord if they get the 400 and if they will be passing it on.

the government were working on something for people with sub meters or no direct energy supplier (like people in park homes) but i dont' think theres been any announcement yet. last i read they were 'working on it' so at least it doesn't sound like its been abandoned.

Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you. Anne Lamott

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

Please consider buying some pet food and giving it to your local food bank collection or animal charity. Animals aren't to blame for the cost of living crisis.

    Welcome to the forum.

You don't get the £400, you only get it if you have an electricity account with a supplier.

There has been talk for months about helping people who are in a situation like yours, but nothing has been done yet.

Unfortunately as I understand it you don't, it is paid to the account holder (your landlord). In theory, as your landlord should not be making any profit on the supply it should be getting passed through to you via a reduction in charges.

As it currently stands you do not get it, the government are/were investigating ways to potentially distribute this to people who do not have an account with a domestic energy provider, but there has been no news for several months now and it seems unlikely that something will happen.
  • Thanks for the responses, I’ll talk to my landlord, he seems like a reasonable person.  I will keep looking to see if the government sort it out. Strange the electric is on this meter yet my gas I pay directly to the supplier!
    Many thanks again

    Hi,
I'm in the same position as you, along with my two neighbours.
We live in 3 small cottages on our landlord's property, and we all have our own electric meters.
Our electric is supplied from the landlord's house via his meter.
The landlord gives us a bill regularly, according to our meters readings.

We have approached the landlord about the energy rebate. He's already being credited the monthly discount to his account. He said he is willing to split the discount between all four dwellings including his. I consider this very reasonable of course, but it doesn't really solve the issue, considering each of us are entitled to the whole energy rebate of £400. Not just a quarter of it.

If you hear anymore on this StevieEJ I would be very grateful if you could let me know.
    Thanks.

Does the landlord split the standing charge too? People who are getting £400 are paying full standing charge.

As far as I'm aware, and according to the government website. the eligibility for the rebate is ALL households with a domestic electricity connection.
