I have to admit, heat is on of my main selfishness areas, I like to be warm. I am learning to turn my themso down a notch now and then, this time last year had it at 30, max this year has been 25, though put it to 22 ealier, and redid the timer for heating. Have to admit I have it set for 8 hours in total. 5am - 8:30 am DD gets up real early, then 4:30pm -9pm. Electric I am using around £30 a month and that includes using the dryer for each wash.

I don't have a tumble dryer. I hang all shirts, blouses, t-shirts, trousers, etc on hangers straight from the washing machine. These are hung from the curtain rail in my bedroom (back of house) above the radiator and they are dry very quickly - even if the heating is hardly on. Socks and pants, towels, sheets, tablecloths, etc, are hung on one of those rings of pegs.
    Not much ironing needed either
Doing voluntary work overseas for as long as it takes .......
My DD might make the odd post for me
  • I have 2 hot water bottles, one on my lap and one for my feet to sit on. If this isnt enough I wrap in a blanket, and put on fingerless gloves - works for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do exactly the same thing. Although I have some of those wheat-bag socks that you can heat in the microwave for a minute. They have saved my life. When I was doing my MSc I would be up late in the night and my feet were freezing (have tiled floor with no under-floor heating - a big mistake!!!). By the time I got to bed, my feet were so cold that I couldn't sleep!!! Now, I often sit here wrapped up in a quilt with my "hot-socks" on and hot water bottle on my lap. Keeps me going I can tell you!!! And it's virtually free!! Loverleey!!!:rotfl:

Dare I admit I have a slight lack of curtain rails up:o
Though found the curtain pole holders today, so hopefully this week will be able to get my bedroom rail up, and son's bedroom rail up (after I have decorated his room)

4 hoovers, not sure where they're from, one of them was mine as I lived on my own for a while.

Nyk, is there no how to guide online on clearing the chimney, was wondering if it's easy to do you may be able to do it yourself?

I have located someone who has chimney brushes! Only thing is, I think he's going to think I'm a little bit mad because it's the same person I asked for all his 'rubbish' from his workshop for my 'cottage industry' challenge :rotfl:

Now... I'm sure I have an old sheet somewhere and I definitely have old clothes... roll on next weekend :D Only one major problem... house is three storeys high, so the chimney brush poles may not be long enough :(

TIP: When attempting to clean your own chimney, close all doors and cover the hearth completely to TRY and catch all the soot that'll come down.

OK, read the 'how to' and it says clean from the top down... I don't think I knew the chimney sweep went up on the roof, I thought the poles went up the chimney from the ground floor :rotfl: Now I think about it, that's NOT such a good idea in case they went right out the top and shoved out a whole load of old soot all over the neighbours. Or worse! People in the street! Methinks I'm calling a chimney sweep this week :o
I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

Frugal living challenge - living on little in 2025 while frugalling towards retirement.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
nyks, when i had a chimney I used to clean out the flue that I could reach on a weekly basis. It was basically a brush on long metal pole and and I reached up as far as i could and twirled.

It did help, but nothing was better than the sweep it has to be said!!
