Nah, it's not an old thing Nyk - you're not old anyway - I do the same thing these days too, and it makes for a much more rewarding time. Sometimes I catch myself thinking 'Why on earth did I think I wanted that?!' but now it's not lurking in a cupboard, it's still in the shops (or in the back of someone else's cupboard) :D

I'm having serious brainache trying to work out the best way to pay the most off the mortgage (the circumstances are ridiculously complicated) and it's a risk whichever way I go... Ho hum, hope the Solution Fairy flutters by soon...

Glad you had a lovely time with your parents Sophiesmum, that's what it's all about.

Don't be so unfair Nyk, Janey's still waiting for the Maltesers lorry; I wouldn't wish that hardship on anyone ;)

Is it anything that one of us on here might be able to relate to, or is it just their silly rules about how much and when you can pay towards reducing the capital? Perhaps Marky or Murra could offer an accountancy perspective? :)

Probably not but thanks - it's mostly about the perils of Inheritance Tax (not actually my mortgage as can't get one).

As a former compulsive procrastinator I now have the solution.... LISTS:rotfl:
Now I am a compulsive list maker instead:D but i do get a lot more achieved these days.:D

Nyk i have several wish lists:o , short term goals, long term goals, things to do before you are too old to do them, books (biggest downfall) and kitchen stuff (next biggest downfall).etc, etc.
After my divorce I had a list of things I wanted to achieve that my ex had held me back from doing - travel, driving, degree, career, so I set about doing them first. Have now been to lots of countries, passed driving test, got the job i wanted, and have nearly completed my degree:D met my lovely OH in process and never been so happy.

Long term would like to live rural and be able to have a decent sized veggie garden and chooks, doesn't have to be small holding just big enough.Coastal would be nicer than inland.Wood burner, wind turbine, solar panels, and a rotavator all feature on my wish list.
Anyone watch the original castaway when they were on Taransay Island? I could quite happily settle somewhere like that - remote and peaceful.
Dehydrator is next kitchen gadget on list:rolleyes: . I like functional practical things stuff like clothes and shoes don't really interest me that much but stick me in a diy store or chef shop and I am in my element:D
Books I am trying to stop buying at moment and actually getting rid of them slowly except favourites:eek:
Would also like to visit macchu pichu - very tempted to do one of the sponsored things for this but don't know about raising the x £1000's sponsorship to do it:confused: would have to get fitter first anyway as a "bit" chunky at moment:o.

My lists are living things too always being added to or adjusted some way. Some things probably will remain dreams but even here I try and get as many elements of what I eventually want where I am. I have nicked some of communal gardens for veggie plot, fruit garden and greenhouse, grow herbs etc on corridor windowsills, and do my pickling, preserving, baking and batch cooking. It doesn't have to be the dream sometimes it can be a state of mind. I may never get it all but I can live some of the lifestyle wherever I am - that's my philosophy:D :D:D
    Reduce,re-use, recycle.

Mumzy, you'll probably find that the lists will begin to appear as you get older, so don't worry. At least you are starting young enough to clear the debts and have a head start when you do feel the urge to start keeping tabs on what else you want out of life. At 20, I didn't even stop and wonder, I just plunged headlong into whatever came along without thinking of the longterm consequences :rotfl:

Sophiesmum, I LOVE YOUR PHILOSOPHY! You sound like you have most things under control there, although I don't know how far along the 'do it before the age of... ' you are. I already passed the 'to do before 40' and am now approaching the final leg of 'do before 45' :o My house plan will need to move to the 'do before 50' list soon as, without winning a lump sum, I really cannot see any way of saving 50k in the next year or so - but it is fun trying :D

Bails - I definitely think Marru or Marky would be the best ones to ask on here, as they are self-confessed accountants. You have probably been doing what I do and researching all the eventualities online. This offers great help but the laws are so different in Scotland from England that anything I've read would probably be useless to you. :o

I'm definitely not a huge expert on inheritance tax, sorry, nyk/Bails.

I'm pretty good in income tax (including BTL taxation and that sort of thing) and capital gains tax, but IHT is a bit too complex!
