what about a big field with a caravan each in the corners?
my paretns have a smallholding and I have a caravan parked there. As has my brother and my sister. We take over one of their fields from Easter to October half term and stay there every Friday to Sunday and all school hols. It's fantastic free entertainment for all adults and the 7 kids we have between us.I have a 5 year old and being able to just open the door and let her go free is fantastic. It's like living in a commune. We eat together, share the childcare and of course search the farm for fresh eggsI can't wait for the weather to get better and start our caravanning again
lost my way but now I'm back ! roll on 2013

Me too!:j
I'm not sure I'd be very good at the "community work" bit though, maybe I could have cheap rent in return for my small bit of work. Or I could run the Library! I'd be really good at that. A bit of a dream is to have my own library - oh I'd let people read what they wanted, but no rude people, no council rules and regs, and an unlimited budget.... ahhh :rotfl:
And yes Nyk I'm trying to be mortgage free. Of course getting rid of my current mortgage will only be a first step as I would still have to pay rent on the other half of my flat. Well actually this years first step is to fill an ISA as I haven't taken out any payment protection (just waiting for the new year now:T ) and then overpaying like mad.

Me too, and it would have lots of leafy green plants in it (for some reason). And sunspots to curl up in and read. Perhaps we'd better have a cat - a beautiful long haired smoky grey one. And no one would be allergic to it.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
Hi Jay and Whitewing,
You are both welcome to come and play with my books anytime. I have approximately 8000 books that I am trying to sell (=trying to find time to sort them through and decide which ones are going to Amazon, which ones to eBay and which ones to car boot sale). I have gone through about 40% of the lot, 60% to go. I am not allowed to buy more books as there simply isn't any more room in here.
Nothing to report today. Two d/d's went out (gas and electricity), went to Post Office to get hay for guinea pigs but as they only had two bags (I am getting buy 5 get one free offer) they let me take one without paying and to pay when I go and get the rest.
I am supporting the commune! Count me (and my dogs and guinea pigs) in. Please can I have two donkeys?

and another librarian here :hello:
I'd still like to stamp the books out and have the tickets in the oldfashioned pockets though! Windows with a lovely view, sofas, good solid wooden tables with comfortable upright chairs for study, a soundproof room for music/audio books/radio repeats. No eating, no shouting, no running, lots of smiling, lots of quiet murmuring and the occasional snore as someone dozes off in the sunshine with a book over their face! Not that I've thought about it much....:rotfl:
I got persuaded at school NOT to be a librarian, sigh
Mark - The snow lasted until the afternoon but it was only about 1/2" deep, v cold though. It was beautifully warm[ish] in the sunshiny valley, no snow, no frost and only 6 miles downhillHow's that work? Freezin' up here, mind!
We were quite frugal with the logs today, Janey51, from morning to 4pm only used 9 .... unfortunately a ton/ton and a half gone already! Only bought on Feb 9th:eek: On with the coats again, but I need to keep the place warmish and dry!?! What's a girl to do - oh well, so much for the sealed pot for Christmas
Off to a nice warm bed, leaving a very happy dog in front of the "tinking/plinking" stove as it cools down for the evening.
Night, night all
DGIf you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!!0 -

I could bring along DD's pony along with my chickens will that do? He is a gorgeous, if slightly bonkers strawberry roan:D0 -
Good morning :snow_grin
We still have some snow on the tops of the hills following the huge snow drifts on Monday .....oooohh, must have been all of 3 inches :rotfl:
I have been away on a course for 2 days on Moving and Handling so now I am wrecked
For some reason, the trainers kept laughing at meI really can't imagine why
But I passed the course so I am now qualified to manoeuvre my "service users" around to my heart's content :rotfl:
Frugalism was never far from my thoughts however.
I was gutted to find out the girl sitting next to me had just taken 11 trailer loads of wood to the tip  There was oak, ash and beech. DH had to be given a stiff drink when I told him :rotfl:
Lunch was provided each day and, as 2 of the people hadn't turned up, I managed to get loads of filled rolls which DH had for his tea both nights.
DH also announced that he had got talking to a tree surgeon..as you do  ..who said DH could have big bags of wood chips from plum and apple trees for £5 delivered for his new smoker (which is still gracing the kitchen table).
Had NSD on Sat and Sun and my DDs/SOs came out yesterday so will need to check that all the reductions I arranged have taken place.
Spent £8.24 yesterday on milk, fruit and some essentials so thats OK.
Happy frugalling :T0 -
Morning Janey, Hi to everyone else:D
  At all that wasted wood, when we had a wood burner we were donated a neighbours shed and old fence. We had to cut the pieces but they didn't half burn well with about 20 years worth of creosote soaked in them, it was great for getting the water in the back boiler hot quickly:D
Have you got a freecycle near you - may be worth asking for wood on there to supplement your logs.
Today I have another day's holiday from work, as well as working on my next assignment I am aiming to get some batch cooking done for freezer, do some decluttering and find time to visit my parents, my dad is quite poorly at the moment going through chemo so want to cheer him up a bit.
Had a no spend day yesterday:D but may buy something today or take parents out for a pub lunch:o
Hope everyone has a great day.0 -
Oh my goodness, I'm doing cartwheels at the thought of a commune complete with sun spots in the library of 8000 books and a strawberry roan! I really think I need to start a Wish Book too and just include the posts from here!:j
Mollymop, your weekends/hols sound idyllic :T We used to go to the New Forest or Wales every hol in our caravan with a group of families and had endless fun building dens and climbing trees.
Janey, congrats on passing your course, I can completely imagine why the leaders were laughing at you
Sophiesmum, what are you studying? I'd love to do some more study, not the right time yet though.
Anyway, back to the commune...:DHow many of us have the smallholding type dream; anyone keeping count?
MarkyMark, further away doesn't always mean more expensive - we went to India for a month last year (with flights from MSE) and it was far cheaper than staying at home, even with our bills added in! :T Another way of travelling is to lead expeditions, where you get paid to go and have a fantastic experience. Not possible at the mo but definitely one for the future again if I can manage it *off dreaming of the Himalaya*
*hurries back* I completely forgot to ask the question I came on for - all this distracting 'living the dream' talk, tut tutNow, the Barclays new ISA at 6.5% pays interest monthly - am I right to stay with my ISA which pays 6% (need to check that) but calculates interest daily? Does anyone know how I can work these things out for myself please, cumulative stuff stumps me? Thanks a lot.
