  • Jumble bee, i got this tip from the os board. Mix 50/50 good quality washing powder/cheapo washing powder(i use smart price) and only use half thr recommended amount. for really dirty loads i add a bit of oxy stuff. I find this works really well and i've got a 3 grubby boys who love to roll in mud and a daughter who paints everything. I occasionly add softner but the washing is still really clean smellling without it. HTH Sharron

:rotfl:thanks...but sadly i was meaning cheaper than my usual 'half the amount of value powder, and no softner ever' :o ....or is that just not possible?!?

.....i have an old laundry scrubber as a decoration in my living room...maybe i could bring that out of retirement and cut down on electricity....

  • OK - I've decided I will include the travel expenses for the next 10 weeks (£20/week) into my budget. I've got a full freezer with salmon fillets, chicken breasts and mince, and a fairly well stocked cupboard; so I can deffo reduce my grocery bills, and since I've recently started eating healthier again will not be buying extra "goodies" (this should hopefully help with my B.E.D as well - if I don't have the money then I can't spend it :) )

Well, that turned ibto a bit of a ramble - sorry

Yes, fizzel you read it right about the tests.
JumbleBee, I think your answer may lie in soapnuts - I have yet to purchase any but there will no doubt be someone along soon to fill you in; apparently they're rather fab, and v cheap!
A NSD here too, which is a minor miracle considering the mood I'm in! I was going to buy a potato (and only a potato) from Mr S for my dinner but OH was with me and mentioned getting some muesli cos he'd run out (he did the shop last week, why didn't he get enough?) so I gave up and left (told you I was in a bad mood :o). I want to do a big shop with a money off voucher you see. If he has bought the muesli anyway (which I'm sure he has), then he can darn well pay for it himself, so there :p Does anyone else still feel like they're putting in loads of hard work trying to eek out their money as much as possible, only to have their OH sabotaging their efforts? He is happy we have £200 saved towards a holiday but he just doesn't GET how much effort that took me  Sorry, rant over!
Thanks for the pepper seeds advice Nyk, will get on it tomorrow. Have to go and pick up a cat that got run over outside our house now :(

    Sending a (((frugal-friend-hug))) for you (I can't find a smiley hug) :)

Sorry about the cat, it's horrid when things like that happen and, as for the OH, don't let something like that get you down. There are always things to sabotage our plans and, as the great Rabbie Burns himself said, "the best laid schemes o' [strike]mince[/strike] mice an men, gang aft agley!" Besides, methinks it may just be a touch of that 'Frugal Millionaire's Syndrome' that we all get now and again - OH may return with ONLY the muesli and a potato, and then you'll need to see the funny side of stomping off and leaving him in the store (to pay) over a box of mixed grains with fruity bits :D

May I also add that being a frugal housekeeper is practically a fulltime job, I don't know how some of you manage when you need to take into account travel times, fulltime employment schedules, kids, pets, budgets, spending diaries and everything else. You all deserve medals to taking part in this extreme challenge.

    lol sounds interesting
a nsp day here, havent spent a penny since saturday so doing well again (i have been having many nsp since i started this challenge)

on the washing thing, ive started using soapnuts, there alot cheaper than washing powder thought the sample batch i got online seemed better than the ones i got via ebay which feel alot drier so i may spend 7 tomorrow buying from where i got my samples from

trying to be as interesting as possible where food is concerned apart from milk and bread and some fruit (and at a push cereal if needed) thats all i want to now buy up untill next thursday when i take my boys to my parents and them move that weekend dreading my first food shop in the new house though as it will be from scratch, on the plus side only a few kitchen cupboards means less chance of buying things to store that will not get used thus even less waste than ever thus saving more money, my dad jokeing said id become tight last time he saw me (he doesnt know about this challenege) i laughed him off, i dont feel tight anymore just carefull, wish id found this site 6 years ago before i made the mistakes that sent me to the site in the first place, also im learning alot from this challenge but i will save my boredom for another post lol and head for bed
