And looking at the list, you know.........I reckon I could make it until tomorrow.........I was going to go today and limit myself to £10 but I reckon I can make it through today.

Mumzy just a thought, have you put all the figures into a snowball calculator. Its just that the interest rates might be higher on some of the catalogues than on the OD & you might be best to pay those of first.....sorry if you have already looked at this.

Mollymop - I went camping on the Isle of Mull in 1980 for a fortnight, were you there then (or maybe you weren't born yet!) I have wonderful memories of my time there, the landscapes are stunning & I remember the sea being full of jellyfish on the way to Iona :)

I was born then but was just 9yrs old :) I didn't move there till i was 18 and had the best 2 years of my life then.It might be a small place but the parties and nightlife were amazing! ah those were the days!
lost my way but now I'm back ! roll on 2013

  • We've just finished the last of Sweetpeas sweet potato and tomato soup and it was sooooo yummy. Even the kids loved it, partly because it looked like heinz tomato but tasted much better.Made the bread to go with it but it was awful. Turned out like a oversized overcrunchy crumpet. The yeast was fine (June 08) so dont know what went wrong except that I've never had much luck with bread. Cant bear to throw it out and this morning we've had it toasted but it needs loads of butter and jam to improve it so its not really MSE at all. Worse still theres no end to it! -it seems to be getting bigger the more we eat. It will certainly do for the rest of the week.Do you have any hints or tips or recipes for bread? Theres still loads of flour and yeast which would be a shame to waste and if I had bread to hand to go with my yummy soup (mushroom next) I could avoid the shops for longer. Juliex

You can do it Keren! I'm so impressed with your willpower. If you make it til tomorrow it will be a whole fortnight you've gone without supermarkets! That's easier to say and imagine than 13 days :D;)

    Hi Juliejay

This is the bread i make by hand -and it has never failed me yet :D

500g bread flour -i use lidls
2tsp salt -sounds a lot but without enough salt i find bread bland

    300ml warm water
    14g fresh yeast
    1/2tps sugar
    • just mix the flour and salt in a large bowl-make a well in the centre
    • mix the water, yeast and sugar in a jug and pour into the well
    • cover the liquid with flour from around the sides
    • cover with a carrier bag and leave until the liquid starts to bubble through
    • mix well into a smooth ball
    • leave in bowl and cover with carrier bag -like a tent
    • once doubled in size, knead and shape
    • place in 2lb loaf tin and cover with carrier -again so the dough can't touch it
    • once about 2"above top of tin put in a preheated oven 230 for about 30-40 mins or until nice and golden -when tipped out-if you knock on the bottom it should sound hollow
If you want less crusty bread you can use part milk and part water -but we like crusty.
and you can ad a knob of butter to it if you want it to stay fresh for longer -but here if it lasts long enough i slice and freeze so i don't bother ;)

if using dried yeast -mix 1 sachet in with the flour, sugar and liquid -start mixing and then add the salt -it stops the salt trying to kill or slow down the yeast

    hope that helps
