Four of the 6 Meacos tested by Which are Best Buys:

    • Arete One 25L = 82% score [BB]
    • MeacoDry ABC 12L = 79% [BB]
    • Platinum 20L low energy 77% [BB]
    • Arete 20L = 77% [BB]
    • 25L ultra low energy = 73%
    • 12L low energy platinum = 67%
They don't seem to have tested the 12L Arete One but advise that the 20L was heavy, so the weights of the two models  might be worth looking at if you're going to move them around.

For the ABC model, which was reviewed in Jan 2020, they say:
    - excellent dehumidifying in heated rooms
    - energy efficient compared to many
    - very quiet
    - like many refrigerants, it's not as effective at lower temps.
That's the bit I'm concerned about. The marketing spiel for the Arete One say it was designed specifically for the UK market - "Designed in Britain for the British weather," but they wouldn't tell me any more when I emailed them as to how this compressor based dehumidifier is better suited to British homes than the ABC, surely they all work the same and are effected by the same temperature ranges. Sounds more like marketing BS to me.
They give quite extensive extraction rate data info on the individual product pages of their website, the Arete has very, very, very slightly better rates but it's absolutely minimal. I am sure that you would notice little difference between them in practice under  the same conditions.

I went for the Arete for the 5 year warranty & at the time I could get one for the same/less (£170)  than I could find an LE/Platinum in stock (thought that for the little extra might as well get one with purification).
A dessicant dehumidifier would probably perform better in my house which is kept quite cool but would cost 2x as much to run.
That's my thinking too which is why I'm steering away from the desiccant type.

I've tested my Arete One 12l with and without the HEPA filter and it is marginally quieter without. I still couldn't hear it through my lightweight kitchen door when closed and it isn't distracting when in the same room.

You're actually looking at the 2 Meaco models that I was deciding between. I came to the conclusion that they're both great machines with no real difference in performance. Ultimately I went for the one with castors, handle, cable tidy and the one I thought looked better (I thought the ABC looked like a nappy bin!).

"a workman, even of the lowest and poorest order, if he is frugal and industrious, may enjoy a greater share of the necessaries and conveniences of life than it is possible for any savage to acquire."
