Does Virgin not charge for BB in advance?

I have just cancelled my 18 month Virgin Home BB contract by phone by giving them the required 30 days notice as my contract ends on 04/12/2022. I was told they would be taking a final payment of £23.95 on 23/11. When I queried this I was told that Virgin charge in arrears. From what I remember, and it was 17 months ago now, I had to make an initial payment to Virgin upfront. On their website it also states that they bill 'in advance', it even states for clarity ie, that they will bill in October for November's bill. So why am I being charged another bill at the end of November when I have just cancelled my BB from the 04/12? I have already paid my bill for November. Can anyone explain this please, or am I just being ripped off?

All providers charge in advance.Your contract end date and your notice period may not align. You'll get a pro-rata refund of the £23.95 bill once your servicec ends.1
