Getting name taken off ex-dh insurance policy

Got a renewal through for ex-dh car insurance.
I opened it purely because everything is getting sent here even though he left the property almost a year ago and I have been paying the bills.
My name is still on it as an insured driver and I don't want it on there. Obviously he has kept it there in a bid to bring down his premium as he has speeding offences and at fault accidents and I haven't had either.

The policy is with quotemehappy.com. There is no number to call except for claims and I can't do anything online without a password as I am not the policy holder.
Any idea if there is anything I can do?
Happy to write 'no longer at this address' and send it back.
DVLA have stopped writing to him here after I did that in regards to a speeding ticket.

Make sure you are not paying for the insurance...

I take it that you must have some of the personal details that would allow them to track the policy. While you can not complain, at least it is a means of contacting them to advise that you are no longer together or want to included on the policy.

And no, I'm not paying for his insurance. Just all the bills for our home.

I'm not sure if it would actually work, but you could try revoking their permission to use your personal data, under the Data Protection Act, or at least advise them that the personal data they hold for your ex is no longer accurate, obliging them to take actions to correct it:

There is nothing to stop anyone adding anyone else to their policy, it becomes the policyholders issue however when they are asked for a copy of the ND's driving license or such and they cannot provide it because they made up a name or arent on talking terms etc etc.  Similarly if a check on CUE shows that they've not declared an incident etc.

What are you concerns from being a named driver?
  • Thanks Eskbanker. I've submitted a GDPR request. Felt good to be actually doing something.

DullGreyGuy I don't want to be a named driver on his policy. I have my own insurance and don't want to be associated with his. He took it out after he was removed from our home. His insurance will not be valid as he probably has told them his car sits on our driveway overnight.
He has had another speeding offence which he probably has no idea about as the letters of intended prosecution were coming here until I notified the DVLA. Also has had another at fault accident a couple of weeks ago (it's mentioned on the insurance proposal doc), plus a private parking invoice for which letters making the usual threatening noises have been coming for a few months.

So you can probably see that this is not a driver that I want to be associated with at all.
  •  You need to check your own car insurance carefully as when you take out car insurance they usually ask you during the quote process if you are a named driver on another car. It can bring down your price if you are so it may be worth checking as if you have said no to the question when getting your own insurance it may affect you should you have a claim. Likewise if you have declared that you are a named driver on another car then taking yourself off the other car will also impact your insurance.

Write to the insurer stating your request to be removed and telling them that the neither he nor the vehicle are still resident at you at your address.
Being named on his policy makes no practical difference, not does he need your permission to put you down as a named driver.

How do you know if your neighbour has decided to add you or not? Or the odd guy at the other end of the street? Or your cousin?

You dont need someone's permission to add them as a named driver, you in theory just need to be able to accurately give certain details about them but in many cases these arent checked at point of sale unless you've bought from a bottom scraper or the details flag something against data already held. If that happens its the proposer they'll be communicating with not the named driver.

You need to check your own car insurance carefully as when you take out car insurance they usually ask you during the quote process if you are a named driver on another car. It is much more common to be asked if you have access to another vehicle, if you answer yes then some probe further to find out how you have access (eg partners car, second car, pool car etc).

At the end of the day if the OP says "no" they are unlikely to get into any issue if their ex (or another random person) has added them as a named driver... as you say, having use of other vehicles tends to lower premiums and so insurers dont mind so much if you are overpaying because you didnt realise someone had added you on.

If you suspect fraudulent insurance details (like the address of the vehicle) then you can report here:

I don't know if you can do anything directly about being a named driver though it's likely fraudulent too. It'd have no impact on you at all though; his driving record won't be linked to your name.

Parking tickets coming to you means the car is still registered there too, but again I don't think that'd cause you any problems if it's in his name.
