seems a good idea but cant help thinking wont help anyone who is already frugal with energy use

    Very true.
Anyone that's just had solar installed or having it installed shortly with batteries would benefit though. Think they look at your last 6-10 weeks electric use.

Unless you are like me and have been doing everything possible to minimise peak use over the last couple of years.  I've no room to reduce peak power use and am not gong to get rewarded for my efforts now.  Surely a more effective and simply scheme would have been to simply offer reduced prices away from the evening peak?

    Isn't that what Agile is?

Not quite.  Agile is a complex product that calculates an individual price for every half hour of the day.

A simpler TOU tariff could offer a basic daytime price, some offpeak prices (like e.g. economy7) and some super-peak prices  (e.g. Mon- Fri between 5 & 7pm) but fixed for duration of contract rather than changing every day.

Agreed.  Agile goes a lot further than what I was suggesting which introduces complications and also risks to consumers.

Sounds similar'ish to the scheme being trailed by OVO, that I signed up for and was accepted. If the grid use utilised between 16:00 -19:00 is less than 12.5% of the daily grid usage (averaged over the month) then you are awarded £20 per month for the 5 months of the trial.

What you're describing is Green Energy's Tide tariff. From June:
If I hadn't been able to renew on Go, and assuming Tide was still on offer, I'd have seriously considered switching. Of course the EPG has changed the arithmetic and (as GEUK aren't currently offering it) I don't know how it would compare today.

  • I've registered. I think we are ideal candidates (ish) as we have young children that require feeding between 4:30 and 7pm, so our day time use is normally concentrated around that time. But it will mean that we will have to get inventive to reduce our electricity consumption to earn anything. We have a gas hob, but using that more seems self defeating in my head - over dependence on gas is why we are in this situation.

Having seen more of the details, I don't think we'll be able to save much now, but we have one or two slow cooker meals a week, so provided we get enough notice we'll have those on the session days, spreading a chunk of the teatime peak over the preceding hours.

if  your  not working or working from home easy to have your hot meal  between 12 and 4pm,a lot of people eat out at least one meal a week just make it that day, heat the hot  water and house  before 4  pm or  just go out that day shopping pub ect . Although the details have not been released yet if its only 11 spaced out days and 4 hours each day it shouldn't  be too hard to  do
  • The Octopus T&Cs (or possible FAQ) said a minimum of 12 sessions, but they are expecting a lot more (maybe even twice that). And probably not until January. I think the weather is generally less windy then? And colder.
