    2. I have curly hair and have not washed with shampoo for several months and my hair has never looked better. I wash my hair with a cheap silicone free conditioner (which I get from TJ Hughes!). I was spending £25 on kerastase shampoo and conditioner.
    3. I have replaced expenisve hair products with Boots Essentials Curling Creme, at £1.29. I discovered this holy grail of hair products from an American forum where they import it for about $18 a jar! It lasts for ever!
    4. Use oils!! I got introduced to oils for my skin via Decleor (£30ish a tub). I now wash my face with jojoba oil with a bit of rosemary and eucalyptus essential oils added in. I moisturise with a tiny bit of jojoba oil.

    Hi JoeyEmma,

I have curly hair too - why is there a benefit to not shampooing it? I mean, I'll give it a go, but... and where can I get this silicone free conditioner? Plus what is Boots essential curling creme - a gel or a serum of some sort? My hair is dry, frizzy and curly - I will try anything to fix it!

Can you let me know more about your facewash oils and how you make that? Also I have a large bottle of jojoba oil - how much should I use and how often? Have dry skin but find that sometimes the mask I have from Origins is too much and skin ends up too shiny, but I only use it when skin is really dry.

    Thanks :T

If your hair is curly, dry and frizzy then it is lacking in natural oils which are stripped out by the shampoo. There are cleaning agents in conditioner too (but not so much) so if your hair won't be skanky if you don't use shampoo. If you use a conditioner that puts layers of stuff like silicone on your hair then it will build up without using a shampoo to strip it off. Lots of conditioners are silicone free, particularly the cheaper ones.

Boots curling creme is a pot of pink goo that looks rather like what you get if you emulsify oil with hair gel and I suspect is similar in composition.

Another thing to try is coconut oil which you can buy in a big jar from asian or caribbean grocery stores. It is solid at room temperature (unless it is a hot day) but you can scoop a bit out and melt it between your hands to use to give your hair a bit of shine.

    What Kittiwoz says!

The majority of shampoo is made of SLS which is highly stripping for your hair. Curly hair whilst looking like it is thicker, can often be finer and more delicate than straight hair.

Have a look on naturallycurly.com They have a thread on their curl-munity about going shampoo-less. Its also on longhaircommunity.com (go to Articles and conditioner only (CO) washing). There is a book on how to look after curly hair called Curly Girl by Lorraine Massey which gives tips on how to look after curly hair.

I am currently embracing my curls and haven't straightened for over a month!

Sorry, didn't answer the bit about the face wash.

The oil cleansing method is described here
    http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=5612

Have a look at post 627 on page 42 as it has recipes suitable for your face. I actually found that castor oil was too heavy for my skin and that pure jojoba was better.

It sounds potty to wash with oil, but if you look at the Decleor stuff or really expensive Eve Lom cleanser (£45 for 100ml!), you'll see they are all pure oil. One thing that I do is make sure I use a clean dry fresh flannel every time I wash, which does make a difference in reducing spots. They are 34p each in Asda (the 20p smartprice ones aren't as good)

Wash your hands first, so that you don't transfer dirt from your fingers onto your face.

Then if you use cotton wool or make up remover pads to apply cleanser or toner on your face........make sure you turn the pad/ball over to use both sides and save on cotton wool/pad and also the cleanser/toner product......which will have soaked through.;)

Or, you can buy little terry-towelling washable pads that will ultimately save you a bit o' cash to spend on treats! ;)

Thanks guys - will try going without shampoo then! What should I look out for that is bad in the ingredients of a conditioner then? How does 'silicone' get disguised in confusing-speak? Or can you recommend some conditioners that have worked for you that I can look out for? Right now I have Boots coconut conditioner & shampoo (black lids).

Hi i use tescos own brand conditioners as cheap conditioners are best as the normal ones are too moisturising, cant recall the names but i use a green bottle( maybe apple/aloe) and a pink one ( jojoba/jasmine)?

    Works really well.
