What is a bit scary is their average usage of 56KWh daily between 1st of April and 30 September during summer.

Where are you located, I can't really see how you can use this much just for hot water and maybe cooking. Were they still heating in April and May, and maybe started already in September?
Heating is on 24/7 year-round but of course kicks in as necessary. Not sure what temp they have it set to but Prob 21-23c
    Central Scotland is their location.

Huge difference then if they can keep to that. Thanks.. Makes my oil heating consumption look Baltic 😁

Not really a huge difference. Most of us have not switched on the heating yet.

Huge difference for them versus their apparent past usage.

They submitted a meter reading on 1st October of 45694. The reading tonight is 45849.
In 27 days they have used 155 cubic metres. In the same period we've used 21 cubic metres.
Admittedly we're in the central south and, like pochase, we haven't turned the heating on yet.

We can't really say that, the meter readings last year weren't frequent enough for us to know how much gas they were using in October 2021.

Definitely need to find out their actual thermostat tenp, and maybe suggest considering whether they can reasonably turn it down a degree or two.

Maybe have the temperature around 16C overnight while they are tucked up in bed? A warmer duvet will cost much less.

Can I ask how you worked that out  for future reference ? The numbers in the OP give usage of 155. How do they translate that into KWh pls?
