Tesco Petrol Pay@Pump taking £120

We use Tesco Pay at Pump and it used to be that there would be a pending £1 and then a few days later the actual amount would go out the bank and the £1 would drop off.
I can see that they've changed the maximum amount now to £120, but the other day we filled the tank up with about £52 worth of Diesel and that's the only amount I could see in the pending transactions (HSBC). Couldn't see that they were holding £120.Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £26,322.670 -
I've get immediate text notifications for my Santander credit card spend, and last few times I've used Tesco pay at pump, I get a text just after inserting the card saying I've made a £120 purchase, then when finished I get 2 more texts, another £120 "purchase", actually a refund, and then a purchase for the actual amount. My credit is freed up immediately. I used it yesterday and my available credit has only gone down by the actual fuel cost.0

I do wonder about someone who has almost maxed out the card and there isn't enough credit to cover the £120 when they only want £20 worth of fuel0 -

If people are not happy why do they keep using *Pay at Pump* Go to the kiosk and simply pay whatever it costs.

I use Halifax credit card and despite the pump says £120 I only see the actual amount I spend and it shows up on my phone screen in a couple of seconds.

However, although I only bought £20 of fuel, I soon discovered that Tesco automatically deducted £120 from my account. I have the receipt. Six phone calls later, and I managed to make contact with Customer Service who told me that it's now "standard practice to take £120 before fuel is dispensed, and that I should have seen it publicised a year ago!" "The refund should be made back to my account within 1-2hrs, but 5 hours on, I'm still waiting. He helpfully suggested that, if there was a risk that there was only £120 in my bank account, to buy shopping from Tesco store before filling up, so that I would be without fuel rather than food!! Luckily, I do have more than £120 in my account, but many have not and, this ridiculous advance charge could see those less fortunate incur overdraft charges, or worse. Surely, this can't be genuine practice? It must be a mistake in programming of the machines. This is a new build garage, with no kiosk or staff and Pay @ Pump is the only option.
Both Tesco and Natwest say the issue is at the other side.0 -
- Tesco will automatically charge your card for £120, then refund the difference to your account from your fuel total. The refund can take 2–48 hours, depending on your bank.
