Bizarrely, I think that would actually save me a lot of time. Walk in, pay all bills in one go. Done.
However, (here comes the penultimate caveat that we all know) the banks would have to have branches most towns and larger villages.🤨

Pay bills in branch?
That's what DD's are for. All paid for without a thought of having to remember about them. Saves a lot of time & money, not having to go to branch, very MSE 😜

Oh no it doesn't save time!!! I do far more personal admin with DDs than I ever did with visiting teh branch - especially when, due to a quirk in the 'machine' you end up with two payments either side of the same month, or it comes out early - convenient for them, not for you.

All my DD's go out on the day set, or Monday after, if due on a weekend/public holiday. Never before date stated.

Likewise I have never known a DD taken early or twice. In some cases I prefer to pay bills manually by credit card (for some 0% credit or cashback), which I can do online. It takes me about 2 minutes to process a manual online payment, 0 minutes for a DD, and at least a 1 hour round trip if I were to visit a branch with one of those Bank Giro Credit slips at the bottom of a bill like I can remember doing a handful of times in the 1990s. That's one bit of nostalgia I do not miss!

Unfortunately, that has not been my experience with DDs. Hence my response.

Which bit though - DDs taken "early" for example or not taken? I thought some credit card DDs were "early" but I found the issuer did different dates depending on the month and statement period - my Barclays and Santander are like that but the date is on the statement; whereas my Lloyds is always the same
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
