I use Face ID for all my banking apps and have done so for a year or two. Not had any problems so far. Atom seems to be the only one that has messages saying that I'm too far away, or my device is not upright but it's usually right  :)
That's probably because Atom have rolled their own facial recognition. It is matching your image as seen through your front facing camera to the image it stored when you registered, rather than using the device's system.

In the time it takes me to line up my face in the oval frame, turn towards the window as the image is too dark, rearrange my hair, check my makeup, blink, look sideways and stick out my tongue, I can have scanned my fingerprint, checked my accounts and finished my banking.

OK, so I made up the sticking out my tongue bit.

I don't appear to have the option to choose between FaceID and Fingerprint. How do you switch between them?

Just to resurect this thread, I wonder whether we are all blindly walking like lambs to the slaughter.

Facial recognition is yet another piece of personal data to be hacked and misused, especially with the increase in AI.

The world of finance really needs a better method of preventing theft/fraud.

I noticed that, in order to join the mass car finance reclaim, if you don't have the details (2007 feels a long time ago) you can join Equifax. But they require you to use a third party app to confirm your personal data (driving licence and image). However, they couldn't guarentee that this data would be discposed of when your ID has been confirmed. For the record, Equifax was subject to a massive hack in 2017. I am not prepared to hand over my mugshot to be stored by everyone and their dog.

If the system confirmed and then deleted the images, it would be fine, but (usually marketing) tends to say no.

    This needs to change.

Please to be discriminated against by financial institutions. Thank-you for taking advantage of my Dyspraxia.:)

What specifically do you think should use for ID then that is as secure?

What evidence do you have that banks using security features in a phone are capturing your image and selling it to AI companies?

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

When I was recently doing research for a replacement phone, many of the reviews tested the security of the face ID on the relevant phone, and found that it could be accessed with a photo. For those phones, at least, they recommended avoiding face ID.

There are a lot of cheapo knock-off brands with fake facial ID or fingerprint scanners. A good quality phone (iphone, main brand androids like Samsung or Google etc) won't have that issue

as a follow on from that, the minimum requirement for robust face ID is a front-facing infra-red capable camera and a total of two front facing cameras with some distance between them to obtain sufficient 3D perspective.

Fingerprint is much more viable and has a lower bar technologically. Though I know some do struggle with it due to physical conditions.

I knew there was a reason I struggled to use the fingerprint ID while gardening with muddy hands!! 🤣

I just saw this report from Which? on face ID:

I feel that this article is somewhat misleading - it heralds long pin/passwords as the secure option, but doesn't mention the massive pitfall of reusing the same pin and password across multiple apps and accounts. It also doesn't touch on the fact someone could be shoulder surfing you as you unlock.

It's fingerprint for me every time. And for anyone thinking "that data can be sold" - the banks don't get your fingerprint/face data - the app stores a hash (a process of mathematics) of it on the device locally.
