Facial recognition

Does anyone here uses facial recognition to log in to their banking apps or approve payments?

Would you recommend it or avoid it?

I'm content enough to use it for one or two savings providers I use, where there is little that can be done once logged in. I'd have reservations about using it more widely. As an additional factor, it is probably ok, but in my workplace it is explicitly forbidden on grounds of providing insufficient security (fingerprint is favoured instead).

I avoid using any biometric log in, my face doesn't work very well with it :o

Seriously though I always think biometrics on their own are inherently insecure as they can be overcome without your agreement or even knowledge.

I have 51 banking, savings and investment apps, all of them have always been on biometric logins. Fingerprint in the beginning, FacedID since iPhone 10. I couldn't manage without biometrics.

I use it for all my banking apps and credit card apps and most of all my other apps that require logging in and support facial recognition.

Why are you concerned about using it?
Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.

Facial recognition that is just using a 2D camera to capture an image of your face is quite easily spoofed. Take the Atom Bank Android app for example, it doesn't even make the user blink or smile. Microsoft's version is a little better as it won't be fooled by a static image, but is still nowhere near as good as Apple's solution, which builds a 3D contour map using IR sensors.

I use face recognition on my iPhone to access my band and CC accounts.  I have no reservations with it.
  • Tried it with a couple of accounts, eg. Atom Bank (Android app.)
Face registered, apparently successfully, but when selected to log in all I get is some "spoof" message. Similarly with voice log in, it's never recognised.
I only now use fingerprint or p.i.n..
I can't remember what organisation it was, but I did try face recognition and it worked perfectly. Even wearing one of those fake glasses and moustache combinations!
Do I personally trust it? No.
  • You have to be very clear what you mean by "Facial Recognition".

The vast majority of the time we're talking about the Face ID system Iphone/Android uses. This holds your face data on your device in a secure area. Then the device confirms whether it's a match and lets your bank know.
They do it this way because just about everyone agreed it was a really bad idea to store biometric data out in the world where it could be stolen or misused.

But some banks like RBS and Natwest are trying to sign up people to do exactly that -

What’s the difference between these biometrics for the Royal Bank of Scotland app and Touch or Face ID?

When you record your fingerprint or face with your device, the fingerprint / face biometric stays in a secure area of that specific device and provides a useful alternative to the traditional passcode / password.

By registering your face biometric with the Royal Bank of Scotland app we can match any future authentication attempts on any of your registered devices directly against what we’ve got stored on our servers.

Not concerned myself but a friend was having problems with RBS not recognising him and getting locked out of his accounts, which was obviously very frustrating and inconvenient, then not being able to deactivate it because it didn't recognise him. I hadn't seen any threads on it so was wondering if problems like that were rare or if people were mostly avoiding it in the first place.

I use Face ID for all my banking apps and have done so for a year or two. Not had any problems so far. Atom seems to be the only one that has messages saying that I'm too far away, or my device is not upright but it's usually right  :)
