I am on a variable direct debit and have been told different things. Firstly that it would go into my bank account once I had paid my direct debit and then it would be credited to my electricity account and I could not access it until my account is reviewed in six months. I feel like we are being treated badly because we only pay for what we use each month and they don't have our money sitting in their account all year. If we paid the same amount each month we could have it in our bank account. It's supposed to help people each month through the winter not wait six months to be able to use it.
For VDD, it seems like it's being credited to accounts.  This is reducing the bill you will get in six months time by £400, or reducing the bill you get each month by £67.  You already have the whole £400 in your bank - it's the money that you won't need to be spending on your bill.

You don't have to wait six months to use it - actually, you have it faster than anyone else.
Thats if they actually get around to crediting it to the account!!

Despite chasing twice they still haven't applied the credit to my account despite their own factsheet stating that for variable DD payers (and some other groups) it will applied at the start of the month and deducted from the next bill.  The last chat agent tried the "its not our fault we are waiting for the money from the government which has been delayed" line which of course is a load of rubbish.  Mind you I had to chase them to produce the bill this month as well despite them being supposed to produce it at start of each month.   Not that anything surprises me with BG.
Oh how I miss Yorkshire Energy for efficiency and straightforwardness (and even Neon Reef to a slightly lesser extent)

We thought the same about EdF for one of the posters here, but then found the credit hidden in a change to the billed amount for electricity - just a direct modification of the subtotal, with no extra line or label.

I've contacted them 4 times since the 10th October using all platforms available and had 4 different answers, including the "waiting from the money from the government" rubbish.
I've now submitted an official complaint about the whole farcical situation.
Just got to wait the usual "10 working days" to get fobbed off again.
November payment will be due before this is sorted out.
  • An update on my situation. Having raised a telephone complaint about not receiving the £66 Government payment for October I received a phone call on 31st October promising payment for October & November by 19thNovember. Payment was supposed to be paid into my bank account, an issue I wasn't 100% comfortable with. Eventually 2x £66 payments have been credited to my energy account on 4th November despite NO contact from BG advising me of the change of protocol.
Having received these payments I decided to make a VERY negative post on TRUSTPILOT stating all of the problems I have encountered receiving these payments.
Bearing in mind I have waited up to 14 days to have problems resolved, I received a reply from BG  within hours of posing a negative comment on Trustpilot [even on a Sunday evening].
My advice to those still waiting of these payments is to use Trustpilot to express your frustration/anger with BG as this will speed things up for you as BG obviously do not appreciate negative comments on this platform.
    GOOD LUCK.

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

My DD went out on 4th November, BG applied a £66 Gov energy bill discount on the same day. On the 9th, I received another £66 credit, followed by a £132 outgoing payment to my bank account which will hopefully arrive soon. I submitted a complaint on 26th October, so this may have something to do with it. I've had a SMS follow up to the complaint stating that it has now been resolved

British gas applied my rebate on the 4th of November yet it didn't leave my energy account to be returned to me until the 10th of November. It's still not in my account as despite most banks doing instant transfers these payments seem to take 3 working days after the refund has been authorised so I expect to see the money in my bank tomorrow. My question is why is BG holding onto the rebate for a week before a refund is processed? If they are doing the same for everyone that pays by DD that must be a substantial amount of money that is being held doing nothing for a week?

That is exactly my theory. I have eventually received 2 months payments into my bank account, however BG must be making quite a profit holding on to it for so long.

Variation on a theme - today £66 has been credited to my bank account, some 10 days after it was shown as a credit on my BG account - but my BG account has not yet been debited ! Wonder if I'll get an extra £66 ? ( probably not   :D)

EDIT - The debit has now appeared - backdated to the date of the account credit !
