Lifespan of treacle?

I have unearthed a jar of black treacle. BBE April 2018.
It looks ok, smells ok. I can't see why treacle would go off. Unless it got contaminated with breadcrumbs etc.
Should I risk it?

Definitely - I think mine is probably of a similar vintage and I haven't died of using it yet.

Its nearly pure sugar and almost no bacteria can survive it... same as the 3,000 year old honey that was found and confirmed as still edible.

If you look at the Tate & Lyle website they only warn of explosive pressure building up in opened cans rather than the contents going off.
  • I’ve a jar of golden syrup that’s years out of date and I’m still using it.

If you’re worried, maybe dip a teaspoon into it and have a taste…?
I call my horse Mayo. And sometimes Mayo neighs.
  • Go for it!  It'll be fine!
  • Treacle is like honey and golden syrup, a forever product!

    I would risk it.
I'm still using a jar of honey brought back from Greece by a friend in 2015.

If it had been opened then I wouldn't, but it it is sealed then it's probably ok.

Does anyone know who is still selling treacle , I haven’t seen it in my local supermarkets for a couple of years !

Just bought a tin of Lyles black treacle on my last Waitrose order for my upcoming home-baked christmas cake.
