Have you tried overnight oats rather than porridge. It may be the texture that you dont like and when the oats arent cooked they are not what I call gunky.

I was going to suggest this, or mixing the oats with yoghurt and maybe a spot of honey and don't cook it, you can change the ratio of oats to yoghurt depending preference. With porridge have you tried adjusting the ratio of oats to liquid - we use milk, my grandpa used water. I our house different people have different preference one likes it very wet and sloppy, two like it drier and the third very dry with barely any milk, thankfully it is quick and easy in the microwave.

Good luck finding something you like and have a lovely weekend with your hubby next week.

  • Never tried overnight oats. So do you just mix them up and eat them uncooked then? Cold?  Sounds even more yukky....lol.  Maybe I should try them again but with less oats and more milk.  I did mix fruit and honey and flavour them chocolate, but still couldn't get on with them.  Maybe its just the oats that DH has, are not nice enough.  I buy him the cheap ones from Mr S or L!*d!, and he thinks they are great. He just adds almond milk, cinnamon and fruit, or sometimes maple syrup.  Trouble is when you shop for them it is a mine field....even extra protein ones these days.....I definitely need that....lol.  I will do some research and try some different ones if I still can't get Oatibix.  Had boiled egg today.  But doesn't fill me up as much as Oatibix, I also put a spoonful of flaxseed on as well

I like jumbo oats. They seem to provide more texture.

I use Jumbo oats with skimmed milk (you get used to it), a couple of spoons of yoghurt and add fruit when I serve it. I usually mix the oats about lunchtime but I dont think it matters too much. There are no set amounts of the ingredients, I just put stuff in until it looks right. You can make them runny with a good amount of milk or more set with less. The only things I measure are the oats as I stick to the recommended amount of 40g but that my choice.

Yes you have them cold and because they arent cooked they have a decent texture. Try them if you dont like them them you can always use the oats for flapjacks.
  • Good afternoon  fellow MSE'ers on this bitter cold day.  However, it has been lovely and sunny and yesterday's snow has all disappeared, so I'm not complaining.  In fact, I am not complaining about anything today....we have had a fantastic day..... and I can now reveal the secret I was keeping about hoping to get the mortgage paid off a lot quicker.

DH had a very small pension that he had taken out years ago, before we ever got together, he left the company and did nothing with the pension.  Anyway, they have been writing to him every year and letting him know how much it was worth.  He now has a very good pension with his current company, plus another small one from a previous company.  So this year when the annual letter popped through the door, it occurred to me that it wasn't really worth a lot in terms of making a huge difference to our yearly income when retired, but it would be very useful in getting the mortgage paid off.  So we had a financial pow wow and DH said he really needed to think about getting a new motor bike soon as his is quite old and has needed quite a bit doing to it the last couple of years and he uses it daily for his commute to work, so needs something reliable and good in the bad weather.  So we agreed that he would withdraw the pension, which he could do from his 55th birthday ( last Sunday) and he would take £3K towards a bike as they will give him £1 in part exchange for his, and the remainder we would send to the mortgage.   He rang up the other week and they said it could take up to 10m days from his birthday, for it to reach our account. Well this morning I logged in as I do every morning and there it was!!
So I have just sent a whopping £9,900 OP to the mortgage and that leaves us with just £2K which we will clear by the end of the year!  This will be 18  months ahead of schedule and to say I am excited is an understatement.
Now the next goal is to clear all the remaining old debts, which are already on 0% interest with different creditors, by the end of next year if possible!  If we can do that, that would be amazing as it would be 10 years since we had our LBM, and we honestly thought we would be left with debts for the rest of our lives. So I am so grateful to all on MSE who have given me tips, advice and money saving ideas and taught me how to budget properly.

So what else have we been up to. Well as DH has the week off work, we went out to the local garden centre this morning to celebrate with my free coffees for the month, well I had coffee, DH had a hot chocolate with oat milk, which he declared very tasty indeed.  I also had a voucher for £3.50 so we put that to the tastiest cinnamon buns I have ever tried. They were massive, and TBH, we could have shared one, but DH insisted on one to himself.  And that was all we spent. We got through the Christmas display quickly, can't stand all the commercialism of it these days, quick look at the fish and plants and came home via that big DIY chain that rhymes with Quick.  We were looking for some UPVC to replace the panel in the back door.  Couldn't find a small enough bit so looked on the Big river site and found some to be delivered Saturday.  So that will keep DH busy...lol

Just done a couple of studies on P/fc and about to sort out tea. Having left over chilli from Monday, which I will put on a jacket spud.

So have a good evening all and stay warm and safe.

So the raining on your parade bit.  Have you checked the amount of tax that has been paid against the amount that should be paid if any.  Now the good bit!
Well done so near you must be able to smell it.  There is nothing quite like that paid off feeling

I'm so pleased for you - that is such good news!

that cinnamon bun sounds nice - is the garden centre part of the D ob ies chain?  If so I'm grabbing my membership card and heading in that direction soon.
