Thank you, @Fizz2015. I wish we had a community pantry locally. Nearest one of over an hours drive away. We do have a great veg shop though, and a cash and carry that has great, reduced to clear, bargains.
I've got a £20 Lidl voucher from the insurance, when i can work out how to put it on the phone. I'm also due to get some M&S vouchers this month, not sure how much, probably less than £5, we both have M&S credit cards. I have a £3 one in my purse already. So these will help to make the budget stretch a bit further.
I think we will have roast potatoes and roast parsnips, kale, (because it's growing well) and a frozen veg, (whatever I can find), with the chicken. I think I may put some jam tarts in while the oven is on, and maybe a cake. I've got pastry left from the pies, and lots of jam!
Hugs to all, mumtoomany.xxxFrugal Living Challenge 2025.4 -
I even render down the fatty bits from cooking bacon or any i'vetrimmed off of bacon with the rind on I have a small glass pot I put the rendered bacon fat in,handy for using when i fry an egg or even some onions.Every scrap of anything edible get used if at all possible. yesterday I made my DD some melting moments biscuits and as my oven heat isn't even it ends to 'catch the bit at the back of the tray which broown a bit more than I would like .So i seperated them from the golden ones and they will go to make a small crumble with a couple of apples .There were about half a dozen browner than I would like biscuits but as a crumble topping they will be fine
food is definitely zero wastage in my house
Just had the last red pepper in the fridge roasted in my remoska, with a salad and the last of the wenslydale and cranberry cheese crumbled over the lot.Made a nice tasty lunch. Rummaged in my freezer and found some salmon fillet to have with mash and green veg for dinner tonight . The rain is sheeting down so no way am I going out in it for shopping I have coffee morning tomorrow morning with my free Dobbies coffee so will see what's needed tomorrow ,but at the moment nothing I can't adapt something else for. Only spent 62p so far on a bag of sugar from Savers on Friday which was whizzed up to make a big tub of cster sugar in my blender 7 days into November and only 62p spent I'm happy with that £59.38 left for Novembers food budget

Some very tasty food being prepared !
Going try make apple crumble this week sometime. I have had lots apples from our old tree this year. I dont particularly like cinnamon added to apples for tarts and crumbles. Has anyone ever added allspice ? Or anything else like ground ginger to the apples ?3 -
I’ve added ginger to rhubarb crumble and it’s lovely, don’t see why it wouldn’t be nice with apple too 🙂 go lightly on it the first time as I imagine it’d be easy to overpower it with the taste of ginger.Part time working mum | Married in 2014 | DS born 2015 & DD born 2018

You can always use apple as an 'extender'
thinking:
apple & mincemeat
apple & (frozen) blackberries or raspberries
apples with sultanas & almonds
apples & frozen summer fruits
last week I was given some windfalls- great. many of the apples weighed 1lb 3 oz each. Just wonderful and I think they must be Bramleys even if they are very rosy coloured.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Just remembered the go to with apple used to be cloves. You would be eating a soft piece of apple in a pie and then- oops- something hard- a complete clove! If you are going to try cloves and use the powdered variety just use a little- it is very strong!Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!
