Thank you, @Fizz2015. I wish we had a community pantry locally. Nearest one of over an hours drive away. We do have a great veg shop though, and a cash and carry that has great, reduced to clear, bargains.

I've got a £20 Lidl voucher from the insurance, when i can work out how to put it on the phone. I'm also due to get some M&S vouchers this month, not sure how much, probably less than £5, we both have M&S credit cards. I have a £3 one in my purse already. So these will help to make the budget stretch a bit further.

I think we will have roast potatoes and roast parsnips, kale, (because it's growing well) and a frozen veg, (whatever I can find), with the chicken. I think I may put some jam tarts in while the oven is on, and maybe a cake. I've got pastry left from the pies, and lots of jam!

    Hugs to all, mumtoomany.xxx

Going try make apple crumble this week sometime. I have had lots apples from our old tree this year. I dont particularly like cinnamon added to apples for tarts and crumbles. Has anyone ever added allspice ? Or anything else like ground ginger to the apples ?

I’ve added ginger to rhubarb crumble and it’s lovely, don’t see why it wouldn’t be nice with apple too 🙂 go lightly on it the first time as I imagine it’d be easy to overpower it with the taste of ginger.

You can always use apple as an 'extender'
    thinking:
    apple & mincemeat
apple & (frozen) blackberries or raspberries
    apples with sultanas & almonds
    apples & frozen summer fruits

last week I was given some windfalls- great. many of the apples weighed 1lb 3 oz each. Just wonderful and I think they must be Bramleys even if they are very rosy coloured.

I always add ginger to anything apple-y as I don’t like cinnamon - lovely in cake or crumble. I was given a few windfalls last week and made a flapjack cake with a tsp of ginger in the mix and grated apple in the middle, was delicious.

Hi, @Floss, that sounds tasty. No tomato soup, but plenty of passata, tomato puree  and tinned tomatoes. So they might do.
Oh yes, passata will do fine 🙂

I've added both at one time or another (not at the same time) - both work fine.

  • Just remembered the go to with apple used to be cloves. You would be eating a soft piece of apple in a pie  and then- oops- something hard- a complete clove! If you are going to try cloves and use the powdered variety just use a little- it is very strong!
Thank yiu Katiehound ..Exactly fond memories of a clove mouthful !!
I must actually buy powdered cloves . I do like the flavour and I agree its a very strong spice.
