No there are no solar panels and to have a heat pump we are looking at another 4k for it to be fitted that’s as well as the 5k help. I’ve not heard of the air con units can anyone post a link to which ones to look at please
Here's a thread from danrv who recently replaced his storage heaters with a mini-split heat pump - which is what is being described to you, not entirely accurately, as "air con units":

  • Yes all radiators and pipes as previously had oil tank however no no access to rear of property due to new house next door - lpg not an option as again can’t get access to the rear of the property unless we had lpg bottles which would be equally as expensive so completely stuck for options unless we win the lottery 😂😂🤷🏻‍♀️
  • It used to have oil central heating so all radiators are in however there is now no access to the rear yard do lpg and oil is no longer an option unless we get lpg bottles which also cost a fortune so unless we win the lottery we are stuck!!

I don't understand how you can have access to your oil tank cut off in this manner, surely you have a right to access?

I have electric wet cental heating, my neighbour has a heat pump but entitled to grants to get it, other neighbour buys 2 big bottles of gas and runs gas cental heating. I think the gas bottles are probably the cheapest. Smart meter says £4.30 per hour for my central heating. I have economy 10 but rates are not great. I also have a stove so use it.

Perhaps you could describe your new house and outside area, if any? It might help people suggest appropiate ideas.

Is the oil tank gone? And the oil boiler as well? Or should people be thinking of creative access routes for oil hoses?

If you have a water cylinder with an immersion heater you already have as much an electric boiler as makes sense. Heating water electrically to pump around wet radiators is really an extravagant way to pretend to have regular central heating, it doesn't make sense economically. The costs these days would be insane.

Some people are trying this sort of thing. Air to Air heat pumps. £700 but vat free to an installer. But high install costs and you need a box outside, a hole in the wall and a pipe to a box inside. But four units of heat for every unit of electricity isn't bad. You can get up to 5x if you pay much more. (Not endorsing this one or this shop just an example).

And yes the standard answer to houses without oil or gas is economy 7 and hrr dimplex quantum radiators, around a grand each so you might afford four... Its not perfect for the future or now but generally be best of the poor options.

And to be boring while you kind of can heat a house with £20 plugin electric heaters you are not really meant to. You can end up overloading the plug circuits, tripping things and risking burnouts. Officially you should have lot 20 radiators fixed to the wall on a dedicated circuit, though by that point its no longer a cheap option...

Oh and of course insulation is the cheapest form of heating.

Sounds like a word with your conveyancing solicitor is needed on what access rights you have

Think you're being overquoted at £4000.   Out block of flats has storage heaters and electric boiler.   Original boiler was Gledhill but these are old and are gradually being replaced.   I had my Gledhill removed and a Thermaflow boiler from a local company installed for £1,600 last year.

As far as costs go, I am one person using water daily for shower, washing, etc.   It uses 4 Kw a night (on overnight tariff) so not expensive.   Because of my tariff, comfortplus the only thing running overnight in summer has been the boiler, so I know exactly how much was being used.  I'm still getting very hot water last thing at night.

Edit:   Sorry just re-read your post and realise you're talking about a boiler to serve your radiators as well, not just water, so you would need a more powerful boiler than mine and will have higher fuel costs   However, my boiler and large combi-storage heater, plus second smaller one in bedroom seldom used only costs me a monthly direct debit of £59 (on Comfortplus tariff and usually in credit at end of year).

For whole house heating I don't know the comparison between oil and storage heating.

Hi lmc74 do you find it heats your home up enough? Me and my husband work so it would really be an hour in the morning and hour in the evening? Is it a wood burning stove you have as well as I was thinking of getting one of those installed as I have a chimney snd fireplace

Isn’t Comfort Plus due to be withdrawn in the near future?
