"Please be assured none of our tariffs require you to have a smart meter fitted , your tariff will not be withdrawn if you choose not to have a smart meter fitted......."

This was in response to a WhatsApp message I sent with regard to what I perceived to be a thinly disguised threat if I did not arrange to have a smart meter installed.
EDF have always said that tariffs are not reliant on having a smart meter fitted, however, if your meter needs changing due to recertification or faulty then a smart meter will be fitted as standard.
However EDF staff seem incapable of understanding that normally a smart gas meter won't be "smart" if you haven't already got a smart leccy meter - I'm getting tired of the emails even after I spoke at length to them on the phone!!
Most EDF CS staff, it seems. especially those in overseas call centres, chat etc. seem incapable of understanding much about smart meters at all. If you're talking about emails about booking to have a smart meter installed, you should be able to turn off any notification in "My Account".
In the end I found a way to put a delay in the nagging system. The maximum (I think) was 6 months - I put the reason as " electric supplier cannot currently fit a smart meter"

I would go as far as to those in the overseas call centres and live chat are incapable of understanding full stop, they are only able to read from a script and will repeat the same drivel again and again, even when one can prove that they are lying. If you raise a formal complaint which can take several attempts with the foreign call centre staff then you will generally get someone from the UK who will be competent and will sort out the issue.

Twitter Direct Message is the best way of contacting EDF and getting solutions, in my experience.

    +1 to this.
  • This is what is happening in France:

'People who refuse the installation of a Linky smart meter at their property in France after January 2023 will face paying an extra €50 per year, it has been confirmed, with up to 3.8 million people affected. This equates to an “surplus” cost of €8.30 every two months, from January 1, 2023.'

Given that EDF is a French company one would expect that surcharges might be discussed with BEIS if smart meter take up starts to drop off.

In the UK they will probably end up offering a cash incentive to the refusers to install one. Different culture.

Furthermore ,anything suggested by EDF would be a red flag to our generally xenophobic Tory Government !!

I have not seen that in any of the mails and texts I regularly get from them.

However they are currently offering the chance of winning £2500 in a monthly draw just for registering interest.

Intriguing to read they can do some things monthly but that apparently doesn't extend to issuing customer invoices.

TBH I actually wouldn't necessarily object to paying €50 p.a. for the dubious privilege of not having a smart meter at this present time.
