Smart Meters - EDF

Options
My parents have received a call from EDF informing them that their current gas/electric meters are out of date and will need updating - obviously to smart meters.  I have searched around but I cannot see anything which tells me that meters go out of date.  Is this another way for them to install smart meters as my parents have stated previously they do not want them fitting.

Is anyone aware of this - are they telling the truth or trying to pull a fast one?

Thanks

  • Meters have an expiry date - effectively when they are no longer certified to be accurate.  It is often something like 10-15 years after installation.

If the meters are outside of their certification date then yes, the supplier would expect to replace them, and yes, the replacements would be smart meters.

You've not mentioned why your parents are reluctant to have smart meters fitted - are you able to reassure them on the subject though? Lots of older people have concerns about SM's but in many cases it's based on "things they have heard" rather than on facts. Smart meters can be a huge advantage for older people as they mean far less frequent reading is required.

Hi.  I am also being contacted every few days by EDF (by email) saying I am to book a smart meter appointment.  I look after 3 accounts with them for gas only.  I have caved in and booked 3 appointments this morning as I am getting tired of the emails.  I don't really see the point as they only want 2 readings per year and I am more than capable of doing that myself.  It seems as though EDF has started pushing these meters again.
  • Not EdF - OFGEM and the government. The target hasn’t changed.

@rothesay From the many posts we get on this forum there are are many people that think even 2 readings are too difficult and then eventually they get a catch up bill and its claims of EDF are scamming me, making too much money. etc. Transfer to a monthly variable DD - providing you can budget as your winter monthly bills will be big
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

This was in response to a WhatsApp message I sent with regard to what I perceived to be a thinly disguised threat if I did not arrange to have a smart meter installed.

EDF have always said that tariffs are not reliant on having a smart meter fitted, however, if your meter needs changing due to recertification or faulty then a smart meter will be fitted as standard.

However EDF staff seem incapable of understanding that normally a smart gas meter won't be "smart" if you haven't already got a smart leccy meter - I'm getting tired of the emails even after I spoke at length to them on the phone!!
  • Hi.
I just wanted to say thank you to those who responded to my original query.  The smart meters have now been fitted (apparently it was all legit and the previous meters had been in a long time) - the fun bit now is sorting it out so my parents stop worrying about the current usage being over budget (we haven't set a budget as yet and the usage is against the standard average semi detached 3 bedroom house!).

Most EDF CS staff, it seems. especially those in overseas call centres, chat etc. seem incapable of understanding much about smart meters at all. If you're talking about emails about booking to have a smart meter installed, you should be able to turn off any notification in "My Account".
